I have to admit to being disappointed that in the story today about Ken Marzinko and the Homeless Student Project at the School District of Lancaster, there wasn’t one mention of a key partner in helping the 900 or so homeless kids in the district: the School Uniform Bank at Pearl Street United Methodist Church.
Pearl Street is my former church, and I remember when the uniform bank started in 2001. The church has served some 1,800 kids, on average, a year; most get two sets of uniforms each. That’s a significant investment of money and time by the church and all the other churches and individuals who support the School Uniform Bank. SDoL would have its hands full trying to help not only homeless kids, but simply those whose families are struggling to buy mandated uniforms, without the SUB.
For some reason the church’s Web site is down, but here’s a link to the cached SUB page if you’re interested in helping out.
