H/T PoliticsPA:
Republican Attorney General Tom Corbett will officially declare his candidacy for governor Monday night in Pittsburgh, two independent sources with knowledge of the announcement tell PoliticsPA. Corbett is considered the clear front-runner for the GOP nomination. U.S. Rep. Jim Gerlach is the only other Republican candidate to declare.
The attorney general’s candidacy has been universally expected since he won re-election last year, a campaign that saw him surprisingly coast past Democrat John Morganelli despite a difficult year for the GOP statewide and nationally.
The news is one of two major announcement expected from Corbett in the near future – the attorney general’s office is also conducting a high-profile public corruption investigation, known as “Bonusgate.” Political observers in Harrisburg have been waiting for the next set of indictments for more than a year after the attorney general last July charged 12 House Democratic lawmakers and staffers for using taxpayer money to help fund a political agenda.
