One of the biggest disadvantages unendorsed candidates have on Election Day is they face a party machine that has the capability to dispatch a couple hundred poll workers on behalf of its team. The New Era reports today that the campaigns for the two unendorsed Republicans running for Lancaster County commissioner, Charlie Smithgall and Heidi Wheaton, are looking to join forces on Tuesday against the GOP-backed duo of Scott Martin and Dennis Stuckey.
Per the New Era:
Heidi Wheaton’s campaign manager, Jim Hughes, said more than 100 poll volunteers for the campaign will hand out fliers for candidate Charlie Smithgall and, at some locations, for judge hopeful Lucy Longo.
Smithgall today said his campaign does not have any Wheaton fliers yet but anticipates having them available for his volunteers to pick up tomorrow, if they wish.
He said he will not instruct his poll workers, far fewer in number, to return Wheaton’s favor.
Smithgall said his campaign volunteers will hand out literature for unendorsed Republican candidate for judge, Heidi Eakin, whose campaign will in turn carry Smithgall fliers.
