A parent’s role is in the stands

Last Friday had to be one of the saddest nights of my life. After playing in my last hockey game ever and losing to a great team, I left the ice. There had been a disagreement between players during the game that resulted in a few suspensions and ejections, but hey, emotions were running high and kids are kids. We play the game. It was, however, what happened after the game that has me agitated. Both teams left the ice with class, wishing other players well.

As I was trying to leave the rink after saying goodbye to all my friends in the locker room for the last time, I was held up by my coach at the exit. I was told a fight had broken out after the game. The fight was by the parents of both teams. Disgusting.

It isn’t so much the fact that people were that emotional because during a playoff game everyone loses some control. It was that after the players had left the ice, and respected each other despite a bitter rivalry, that parents couldn’t let it go. Parents need to remember who plays the game.

This is becoming an epidemic, and recent examples prove it. Remember the father throwing the wrestler off of his son? If you don’t here is a link to a news station that has a clip and story on it.

This isn’t the only example. Just Google “parent fights at games” and see what you get.

I know I’m tired of sports not being about the players, how about you?
