The Philadelphia Museum of Art makes its case for Paul Cézanne as a painter of enormous influence in “Cézanne and Beyond,” a big exhibit opening Thursday which not only gathers 40 paintings and 20 watercolors and drawings by Cézanne and many more by artists inspired by him, but ranges across the 20th century and even into the 21st. Works by artists as diverse as Pablo Picasso, Arshile Gorky, Brice Marden, Jasper Johns, Piet Mondrian, Giorgio Morandi and Ellsworth Kelly are on display; Charles Demuth is well represented by a number of watercolors. All of the works are swimming in the Cézanne
energy field — from Picasso’s cast-metal beachgoers (above) to Brice Marden’s looping abstractions (left). This playful exchange of ideas is what this show is all about. This is the show’s only U.S. stop, so catch it while you can.
Do you dream in Cézanne?
