The classes of ‘08 hang it up

Work by Scott Hawxhurst, PCA&DAs graduation nears for area colleges, they’re also giving over gallery space to students. In some cases the exhibits don’t run for very long, so hurry!

The Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, 204 N. Prince St., will display a selected work from each graduating senior in its main gallery until May 23. In addition, the entire school will become a gallery 3-6 p.m. Saturday, April 26 for the annual Senior Show & Celebration. Works of graduating seniors will be on display throughout the building, with the work of photography graduates on the first floor, fine arts graduates on the second floor, graphic design graduates on the third floor and illustration graduates on the fourth floor. A total of 47 seniors are scheduled to exhibit, using over 7,000 feet of wall space, according to PCA&D. Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday.

At F&M, the Phillips Museum of Art (in the Steinman College Center on College Ave.) is filled with student work on all three levels. In the Dana Gallery, “Double Take,” the 2008 senior art show, runs through May 17. Downstairs in the Rothman Gallery, “Through the Looking Glass,” the 2008 student art show, runs through May 9. A reception will be held Wednesday, April 30, at 4:30 p.m. Finally, “Experimental Portraiture,” mixed-media works by Daniel Westfield ’08, will be shown in the Sally Mather Gibson Curriculum Gallery through May 17, with an artist’s talk and reception today at 4:30 p.m., and “Fusing Aesthetic Object and Cultural Relic: New Museum Approaches to Archeological Artifacts,” photographs by Kaitlyn Pettengill ’08, will run through May 9 in the Curriculum Gallery’s classroom. An artist’s talk and reception will be held 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 1. Museum hours are 11:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday and 12:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. 

Elizabethtown College’s Hess and Lyet Galleries in the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center will also be devoted to the work of graduating seniors. The show opens 1 p.m. May 4 and runs through May 17. Gallery hours are 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Friday and 1-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Millersville University seniors will exhibit their work at the Candy Factory Gallery, 323 N. Queen St. In addition, now showing at Millersville University’s Sykes Gallery, in the Breidenstine Art Building, is “Emerging Artists in Residence:” ceramic sculpture by Pei-Rong Li, photography by Jeffrey Moser, ceramics by Mel Griffin, printmaking by Christian Herr and sculpture by Samantha Halsey. The show runs through May 1, and hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 5:30-8:30 p.m. Monday. Also going on right now at MU is the spring pottery, jewelry and Metals Guild sale in the basement of Breidenstine, 10 a.m.-8 p.m. today and Friday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday.
