A little Lowell George slide guitar with Bonnie and Emmylou on backup vocals? Now that’s what I’m talking about…

Cherie

Via old old bud BR, who also liked that new wave power pop sound way back in the day. Good music for a sunny day.

Free Ride

Had the boy singing this the other day, I’ve never had any Edgar Winter Group besides this tune and “Frankenstein” on disc, compact or vinyl. That might have to change.

Thank You Friends

August 22nd, 2009 · No Comments

And then, three weeks later, I finally notice that there was a happy birthday thread to me over on the news side. Don’t spend too much time over there - sneak in and out to see what’s going on. But thanks.
This is some of the only footage I’ve ever seen of the original Big Star, […]

Long Time Coming

August 13th, 2009 · No Comments

But you know the darkest hour is always… always just before the dawn…

The summer of ‘69 must have been something. In addition to the moon landing - and Vietnam - there was Woodstock. After the conflagrations of 1968, the race riots, the asasinations - going down to Yasgur’s Farm must have seemed very appealing indeed.
Off […]

White riot

August 12th, 2009 · No Comments

White riot, I wanna riot
White riot, a riot of my own…
Tea Baggers are hoping for a literal “riot” at an upcoming town hall event, in order to create a spectacle for CNBC’s cameras. And the event will be hosted by a Democratic congressman who this week had a swastika painted on a sign outside his […]

Live and let…

August 9th, 2009 · No Comments

Live.
Been a tough week. Lot of anger out there.
We’re having a political meltdown, just as we had an economic meltdown. Seem to go hand in hand.
This was a centerpiece of the McCartney show last weekend - which rocked, by the way - and it was never really a tune I liked or paid that much […]

Something

More Abbey Road goodness. Did Pattie Harrison have “something” going with Eric Clapton at this point?

Flagging enthusiasm

August 6th, 2009 · No Comments

Some sort of improvement project going on along Columbia Avenue right below Stone Mill Plaza, they’ve had the orange cones up for more than a week now and the flagman - young-ish, thin guy with wraparound silver shades and a ponytail, I’m guessing he’s a musician by night - is the most enthusiastic flagman I’ve […]

Without Circuit City…

August 5th, 2009 · No Comments

…where’s a good place in this ‘burg to buy electronics? Thinking about getting a portable DVD player so the kiddies can watch a show on long car trips, and Amazon.com offers plenty of options, but would rather not buy something sight unseen. Maybe Wal-Mart or Target are the only real choices with Circuit City out […]

Paperback Believer

July 25th, 2009 · No Comments

Hilarious. Via Facebook and old bud BR, a bit of a mashup - though I think George Harrison would have lasted maybe five seconds on stage with Davy Jones before clocking his wannabe Monkee arse.

Pretty Please

July 25th, 2009 · No Comments

Now that’s what I’m talking about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSo98Iyxh94

This is the seminal L.A. mid-’70s band The Quick, fronted by Danny Wilde, later of the Rembrandts (!); Redd Kross covered this ferociously on 1997’s “Show World,” and the tune was also covered by the Dickies. Ended up buying/downloading a whole bunch of Quick stuff via the band’s MySpace site. Aint teh internets grand?

Open me Eyes

July 25th, 2009 · No Comments

Just ran into this again over at the PowerPop Blog, this would be Todd Rundgren and the Nazz from 1968, described by Rolling Stone as “Beatlesque punk,” which sounds about right. Opening four chords are almost a direct rip from the Who’s “I Can’t Explain”; the vid was apparently shot in Upper Darby, on a day […]

The man who knew too much

July 24th, 2009 · No Comments

From DougJ over at Balloon Juice:
This tells you everything you need to do know about our elite media. From MSNBC’s First Read (via Politico):
Honest question: Is there a point when the president knows too much about an issue?
That’s what it’s come to: we’d be better off with a president who knew less about the issues.
Hell, […]

Get out of Myself

July 18th, 2009 · No Comments

From Redd Kross, one of my favorite lesser-known bands of all time (along with Jellyfish, Teenage Fanclub, Fountains of Wayne, Dodgy and Sloan, all of them cut from the same hook-laden, overdriven Rickenbacker cloth). Plus, the lead singer, Jeff McDonald, is married to Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Gos. And it don’t get anymore pop than that.
Dig a […]
