Looking for results

I love stories like this, endlessly flogged on Drudge, because they cop the attitude that history ends after the very next election:

Republicans have moved ahead of Democrats by 48% to 44% among registered voters in the latest update on Gallup’s generic congressional ballot for the 2010 House elections, after trailing by six points in July and two points last month.

Repubs are going to gain ground in 2010, question is how much - and the answer will hinge on what the economy’s doing.

But let’s say the economy remains in the toilet; come 2010, Republicans could win huge.

And then what?

Well, and then they’ll have to govern; then they’ll have to try and turn the economy around. And if they also fail - then there will be a backlash against them.

Drudge and the right in general want to see this trend as America returning to its true conservative convictions, voters realizing what a mistake they made in punishing Republicans in the past few elections. Garbage. Voters simply want results - and when they don’t get them, they’ll go elsewhere.
