This pretty much proves Ryan Sager’s point below - about Americans yearning for this mythical past where everything was so wonderful, and it’s all gone to pot today, and if we could only recapture the innocence then we’d all be all right…

I mean, the Mean Joe Greene commercial was 1979. Are we remembering 1979 as the “good old days?” Really? Jimmy Carter and the Iranian hostage crisis? The energy crisis? Three Mile Island? Disco?

This is schtick, pure and simple. This is history for people who can’t even remember their own freaking history, for people who look back and remember only the good, forgetting the bad. News flash: 1979 isn’t anything to aspire to. The country wasn’t in wonderful shape, it was in pretty lousy shape. We weren’t all joining hands and drinking Coke.

Does Glenn Beck remember that the income tax rate for the top bracket in 1979 was 70 percent?

Ah, no. This isn’t about facts, see. This is - once again - about that feeling in your gut, in your heart, that you just know how better things used to be. Even when, in reality, they were as bad. Or worse.
