Goodbye Sam

If you grew up as a rock and roll obsessed kid in Lancaster County in the early 1980s, as I did, the Sharks were gods. I had no sense that they were just a local band, because local was all I really knew back then. And when they won the Basement Tapes… well, that just proved that they were better than your average local band, right?

Then they got hosed by Elektra Records and as it turned out the Basement Tapes win wasn’t the start of the big time, it was pretty much the pinnacle. As we’ve said so many times - there’s no justice in rock and roll, and the Sharks could tell you all about it.

Nevertheless, they were a fine local band, and lead singer Sam Rawhauser, nee Lugar, was a big reason. Bassist Shea Quinn grabbed a lot of the spotlight for his mane of ’80s hair and stage moves, but Sam had a solid, heartfelt rock and roll voice, and as I was reminded when I saw one of the reunion shows at the Village two or three years ago, he could play guitar pretty damned well.

As noted a few weeks back, Sam had recently gotten very, very sick - and now, as noted in comments to that post, Sam has died. Thanks to Carla for calling me just now and alerting me to it. No idea on funeral arrangements yet, if anyone’s interested I’ll post them as I get them.

I met Sam twice - once when I wrote a story on the band before the reunion show, and then at the show itself. I’d gotten to know Marko Showers, the keyboard player, who’s a big right-winger but (as is somehow the case with a lot of right-wingers, go figure) I actually get along with pretty well in person, so Marko brought me backstage. And even though they were “just” a local band, it was still a big deal to me. I mean, I idolized these guys as a kid; had all the albums, can still play some of those songs (”You Make Me”; “On My Own,” etc.).

His music meant a lot of things to a lot of local people, me included. He’ll be missed.

Update: Yes indeedy, thanks to colleague CE for sending this one my/your way…

A little update, Sam had a very aggressive form of cancer that can be treated if it’s caught early enough… and it just wasn’t. There’s talk of a benefit concert to help pay down some of the medical bills - I’ll do something on that here and in the print edition when we get details.

Update 2: Illness is expensive, you can help.

Sam was a friend of mine and a great guy. Aside from his fantastic career as one of the best frontmen I have ever seen, he will be missed the most for his personality, humor, and the way he treated others. The new music he was working on was every bit as good as that which the fans of the Sharks were accustomed to. Prayers to Sandy, the guys, and to his son Ian, of whom Sam was so very proud.

My heart breaks for Sam's family, friends, and band mates. The Sharks were an amazing band to which we loved calling our own (Lancaster). Many fond memories dancing the night away at The Village and I still treasure the autographed photo I received many years ago as a star stuck fan. What a great group of guys! So nice!

Dance in Heaven, Sam! Peace!

I know you have your rep to consider, Gil, but your political aside about Mark Showers ("...Marko Showers, the keyboard player, who's a big right-winger but (as is somehow the case with a lot of right-wingers, go figure...) I actually get along with pretty well in person,...) had absolutely NO place in an otherwise fine tribute to Sam.

Check yourself, mate. There are some times when even your most ardent supporters don't give a crap about your view of someone's politics, especially when it is, indeed, completely irrelevant. This is one of those times.

thank you Phos, well said.

I was one of those "Sharkies" in the early 80's. If the Sharks were in town I was there at the Village, dancing the night away.

I remember my ex went to see the band play at CBGB's in NYC. He had a great time.

I cannot recall another local band that had the following like the Sharks. Gandalf and Hybrid Ice were also very popular bands back then.

I was a HUGE fan of the Sharks and interviewed them for the Patriot-News when I was in high school. They exposed me to great music, some of which I heard first as Sharks covers. (At 17, in 1985, I couldn't figure out why they just didn't go ahead and record U2's "I Will Follow" or INXS "Original Sin.") So glad I caught their reunion show last Thanksgiving. Sam was lovely and he'll be missed.

I worked the snack stand at the Catholic dances at OMPH in the late seventies and into the eighties. He was a heck of a nice guy and I followed them ever since. Kate nailed it-The Sharks and Hybrid Ice were the two best bands in the day, IMOO.

Hey don't forget us Old Colony people and Torch. rolleyes.gif Hubby is in the mountains and I haven't told him yet about Sam. Seems they were both youth counslers for Camp Shand. Remember having friends call excited because they were in to see the Sharks and Bruce Springsteen showed up.
