The speech

September 9th, 2009 9:21 pm · 12 comments

Well, I thought it was a tour de force - maybe the best speech I’ve heard him give. There were quite  a few b*tch-slaps in there - the one involving Palin, you could practically hear the contempt dripping from his voice, and given the mendacity of the “death panel” lie, that’s more than appropriate.

I’m not convinced this is going to be cost-neutral. I frankly don’t know how you tackle something this massive without incurring costs beyond what you’re already paying.

Also loved the jeering of the Republicans, especially the guy who yelled “You lie!” That would apparently be S.C. Rep. Joe Wilson. I’m sure he’ll be a Fox News hero now - but it showed the vast bulk of moderate Americans just how boorish the right has become.

But in the most eloquent portion of the speech, its ending, he talked of the character of our country. The moral responsibility that Americans rightly feel for one another; the ability to stand in another’s shoes. And this concern for our fellow citizens is American, is profoundly American.

He took swipes at big government but did not back down from his assertion and belief that a government of, by and for the people has a moral obligation to those people.

In short, it hit on the idea of America - what is best for America. That is what has been missing this summer. It’s back now, in full force.

I have to give the President an A+ on his speech. If his promises (which are not supported in the current proposal by the house) of what he will sign come to fruition then, GREAT.

I especially appreciated the comment by Sen. McCain regarding the comment from the un-named Republican who shouted, "you lie". It was inappropriate and disrespectful and he should immediately apologize publicly. Sen. McCain is a true statesman.

Unlike Barry, I will try to not be partisan. Barry did not comment on the crux of all this - that is the infrastructure of healthcare - our hospitals and doctors and nurses. Make no mistake, hospitals will be paid less and will be expected to pay back "fraulent" charges (which is determined by paid mercernaries). This would be ok EXCEPT MOST hospitals are hanging on by a string with shoestring budgets. I ASSURE YOU, more hospitals will go out of business as money is shifted from them back to Barry. Yes, before you bring up LGH's profits, LGH is an anomaly in this aspect (as evidenced by it being the 3rd most profitable hospital in all of PA. If you don't believe that most of Barry's health reform will be off the back of hospitals, then you don't understand enough and need to study the proposal more.

Now, on to doctors. There is a SHORTAGE of doctors as it is. The wait time to see your family dr is in the weeks to months. Now Barry will unload 47 million more patients???!!! Huh?? And just who will see these people? Especially when they are Medicaid or people with "public option" insurance. If you don't believe me, look into what has happened in Massachusetts once they mandated everyone has health insurance, drs have left and patients can't find doctors to take care of them!

I will have to give it to Barry for his very brief (and very vague) nod to tort reform. Barry has asked for sacrifices from everyone - the public, hospitals, doctors - but not suprisingly not from those who line the democrats wallets (ie. LAWYERS). I hope, but doubt, that Barry would bite the hands that feed him.

Lastly, I got scared by this speech. The tone was "it's my way or the highway". "I will call you out". How is this constructive? It is a direct threat to anyone who dares questions him. He constantly belittled Republicans and literally pointing fingers at them...this is the leader of the free world????

The President is a great speaker and he communicates well....so for style he gets an A.....for substance he comes in at a C. He has great ideas, but I do not believe we can afford the Presidents's plan. Here's an idea, let's see him and the Democratically led Senate and House squeeze out all those savings from increasing efficiency and stopping fraud in Medicare and Medicaid....and if he can save the billions he referred to...then I'll trust this government to run a government option...not before. What has government ever done that was more efficient and had less fraud?

BTW, I too am disgusted with that guy that yelled out.....respect the office if nothing else. That was uncalled for and he should apologize.

Dear President Obama:

I just read your health care reform bill online.

How is the state of FLORIDA to pay for $33 million of undocumented health care cost for immigrants present and future?

Our borders are sure as h^ll aren't controlled, but someone has to pay for their care. Immigrants DON'T disappear once you pass into law NOT to pay for their treatment.

HOW DO THE STATES GET REIMBURSED?

I KNOW...

We ignore the EMTALA and allow these immigrants to die at our ER doors. Hey, health care reform isn't giving us any money for immigrant care so we don't have to abide by the "federal" EMTALA.

In essence, our ERs are going bankrupt, because our state revenues alone can't treat the immigrants.

Mr President, you failed to control our borders and now we can't control cost of our ERs from the onslaught of undocumented immigrant patients!

So, show us the money or risk seeing major county hospitals going down the tube!

Florida has no income tax...California long ago passed tax restraints..and like many other low tax states...want federal help because they can't meet their state obligations....Let Florida do what AZ has done...Crack down on employers of illegal immigrants...they come for work...not because Obama isn't protecting the borders...Without work, most will return home to their families/roots...they don't come for "our freedoms" ;they come for money....

You didn't quite make it non-partisan there Doc. He in no way said anything like "it's my way or the highway". What he will call out are the continued lies (death panels, etc.) anyone (not just Republicans) put out there. Guess you weren't paying attention.

good point..

where are the doctors?

i asked that to president obama in my letter to him today!

can he offer FREE training for future doctors?

i don't think so..

can he prevent our ERs in california, texas and florida from going bust due to treating undocumented immigrants? i don't think so..

I know we need health care reform, but a lot of services have to be in-place before we insure 47 million...

LOTS OF MONEY!

more docs, more nurses

get rid of hospitals, they are too costly(going bust as i post).

clinics vs ERs.

INCENTIVES for staying fit-- reduced insurance premiums!
.

An the insurance industry is.......

(to convoluted).

adios
