The beer makes the man

July 30th, 2009 1:20 pm · 24 comments

Ain’t this ridiculous? So Obama’s having Gates and the cop who arrested him over at the White House for a brewski - and now this becomes a “controversy”:

Earlier this week the White House indicated each man would drink the beer of their choice — Bud Light for President Obama, Blue Moon for the police officer, and perhaps Red Stripe or Beck’s for Gates.

But one Massachusetts congressman thinks another beer entirely should be served: Boston’s own Sam Adams.

In a letter to Obama dated Wednesday, Massachusetts Rep. Richard Neal strongly urges the president not to drink Budweiser, now owned by a Belgian company. Nor should the White House consider serving Miller or Coors, Neal writes, both owned by a United Kingdom conglomerate.

Instead, the White House should serve the three men — all with ties to Massachusetts — the local favorite, not only because of its popularity in the region but also because it remains the largest American-owned and brewed beer, Neal says.

Sure, but Sam Adams is expensive beer. Quaffed by elitists.

Real American he-men drink Bud. Which is why Obama has no other choice but to drink it: Hannity and Limbaugh and all they represent are on the lookout for Elitist Beer. Obama has to drink American beer - can’t indulge in a Heineken or a Becks or a Corona. Can’t have a Sam Adams or a microbrew. Who does he think he is? His choice of beer shows he thinks he’s better than Bud drinkers, or Miller drinkers,

But Obama could short-circuit the whole thing and just serve Yuengling.

He could have short circuited the whole thing by just keeping a local issue and answered the press conference question without making a fool of himself and digging a hole he is forced to climb out of.

The staged brew fest is a joke, the cop is bring in his union rep and a lawyer. Gates should get some good pub to sell some books.

The lady who called 911 was not invited.

Me? I'm a lightweight, I'll have a Miller lite tonight, thanks. Can't take the Yuengling anymore - fills me up too fast!

I agree with everything you've said. This whole situation is ridiculous, especially the fact the President is involved. He really should have had no involvement in this whatsoever. However, I can't agree with you on the Miller Lite. If you have to go light, at least go with a Sam Adams light.

I know...but Gil is right..I am getting old. But Miller lite sort of grows on you. Most of the time I am a red wine guy, anyway.

Once in a very great while New Pop Shawn and I agree on a topic...I'll drink to that!

I'll check out the Sam Adams light.

Don't stop with the Sam Adams light. Sam Adams makes some other really great beers this time of year. Get yourself a sampler case and have fun. Their Summer Ale, Blackberry Wheat, and German Wheat are all pretty light and very yummy this time of year.

Its funny you mention that. I was in Maine last November and stopped by a brewery in Bar Harbor that was selling liter sized bottles of their blueberry beer. I brought a bottle home with me, but haven't drank it yet. I keep forgetting I have it. I think this weekend would be the perfect opportunity. I also brought back a great very dry blueberry wine from a Vineyard in Maine. Now I'm thirsty too!

And LancNewbie...I am mistaken for a liberal all the time! Maybe it is the wine, or the Dead Sticker on my car.

A wise friend once quoted, from sources other than himself, "Life is to short to drink cheap beer."

I couldn't agree more.....

This time of year, it's Sam Adams Summer Ale in fridge. With a stash of Rolling Rock for those real hot humid work-in-the-yard-need-a-quick-beer moments.

How bout a little fun, what is the best microbrew all you beer drinkers have had? I'll offer one up, Fat Dog, at Stoudt's in Adamstown. If you're up that way, stop in and have one!

We need to get over there soon....It's been years since I've had a Stoudt's beer. I remember liking the Fat Dog Stout (and I'm not usually a stout drinker). For domestic beers, I like Bud Lime.

Have you ever had a Heineken in the Netherlands or another country in which it's brewed? It tastes much better.

Years ago, I worked at Boscos, a brew pub in Nashville that brewed 8 different beers on premises, plus a cask conditioned ale. They bottled none of it and only sold it on the premises. The brew master, Chuck, told me that there is no such thing as an imported beer that isn't spoiled. It's just not possible. He also explained why many beers are bottled in brown glass. The tint filters out the harmful sunlight that oxidizes the beer and causes spoilage. Green is better than clear, but it's nowhere near as good as brown.

My favorite microbrew is Boscos Famous Flaming Stone. If you have the opportunity to visit Nashville, I highly recommend stopping in for a cold one.

THere is a brewery in NC that is the same way. Red Oak brewery only sells kegs of beer, they don't bottle any of it. Their Battlefield Black is one of the best dark beers i've ever had. There Red Oak Lager isn't bad either.

Same is true for Guinness in Ireland. For export, they add preservatives. And they don't aggressively pasteurize the keg stuff in Ireland. If you think you don't care for Guinness, be sure to try it in Ireland (it is worth the trip!) wink.gif

That doesn't sound very typical to me. Can you think of any other instances where a president got involved in a local incident between two people and invited them to the white house for a beer to discuss what happened? I disagree with Obama for getting involved in this whole thing, but the fact that he got involved and they way he is handling it, is certainly not "typical".

I agree, he should not have got involved at all, but since he did,,,,well having them get together and make peace over a brew is far better than a couple years if litigation and other such jackazzery. This is the kind of stuff I like about Obama.
