Toomey’s chance

Eeeenteresting. As noted over at TPMDC, a new Quinnipiac poll has Arlen Specter in a dead heat with Pat Toomey, 45-44 percent. Against Joe Sestak, Specter’s Democratic primary challenger, Toomey’s up 39-35 percent; but both candidates lack real name recognition.

Specter now is roped to Obama’s economic policies; and the 2010 election will be seen, rightly, as a referendum on those policies. Toomey’s strength in the past has been with social conservatives, but my guess is he’ll be talking fiscal conservatism from here on in - he’d be foolish not to. Pennsylvania isn’t electing him on the basis of his stance against abortion. But he could get elected for standing against additional government spending.

I don't agree. Republicans are angry with Specter because many consider him to be a turncoat, and Democrats are uncomfortable with Specter because many consider him to be a turncoat.

I can't see Specter's election being a referendum on anything other than his own actions.

If that were the case Sestak, the real Democrat, would be polling higher against Toomey. Specter will be riding Obunko's coat tails ... down the drain.
