All MJ, all the time

Via Atrios, Kevin Drum:

The Michael Jackson tribute is currently being aired on 18 separate channels on my TV.  Just sayin’.

Don’t get it. Understand that Michael Jackson was an amazing performer, amazing songwriter, groundbreaking in the early to mid-’80s. And maybe it’s because I lost interest in Michael Jackson along the way, post-’80s, when he was no longer as groundbreaking - and no longer as important to the culture as a whole.

It became hard to separate the persona - his appearance, the allegations about molestation, the dangling the kid off the balcony - from the music. I guess at some point I figured the persona was the music, or became the music - which caused me to turn away from the music.

And in the end, I just don’t see him as culturally important as a John Lennon, or an Elvis. Maybe these crowds today belie that; maybe he is as important to our culture. Which kind of makes me wary about that culture.

Every now and then it seems we need to have an orgy of grief over something. Is our long national nightmare over yet?

Its a vulturous feeding frenzy by the media to pacify some need to be 'emotional' about something/someone.

Emotional gluttony. Something like that. Someone I know had a better name for it and I can't think of it.

Im sorry about the loss of this man as the dad to his kids but yea, enough is enough. This seems to be the norm anymore tho. Making the most /being excessive over something that is ? to many.

I wish the president would stop talking about him. For God's sake, there's a coup d'etat going on in Honduras, the economy is cr@p, we need health care reform...shut up about MJ and pay attention to stuff that matters!

Yeah, and we missed all of that because every single network (!!!!) and every single cable news channel (!!!) ran nothing but MJ Memorial service all day, and are now rehashing it tonight! Grrrrrrrrr.

There are times when I am happy NOT to have television in my house!!!
RPI MJ, just thankful I don't have to see and hear about it every waking moment.

Its terrible how people are forced to sit around and watch the tv all day. I really wish someone would come up with an invention that would allow the tv to be turned off. I hear they are working on it now. I'll keep my fingers crossed for all of you.

I hope it comes soon. I can't reach the TV from my computer so I have to keep listening and listening and listening...

I think there are some stimulus funds heading to the group that is currently doing the research. I'm sure that will help move things along.

Well, I like to watch the national news. This isn't "news." It's "infotainment." Even if you try to look for news online or in print, it's still predominantly MJ.

I hope I'm not a terrible person for saying this, but I laughed out loud when Stevie Wonder said at the funeral "The day came that I hoped I would never live to see." (The only reason I heard the funeral is all the patients had their TVs tuned to it...I couldn't escape it. I was surrounded.)

Remember entertainment is a mega industry in our country, and there is no way this industrial wouldn’t milk his death , (like his life) for all the entertainment value they could get from it.

This entire media lovefest for Jackson reminds me of Moses on Mt Sinai. While Moses was in prayer the multitude gathered and worshiped a golden cow on a pedestal.

Well, the masses around the world are worshiping a golden casket bearing the body of a very troubled deceased man.

MJ's music and talent are renowned but enough with the worship and adoration.
