Beer in the buggy

Apparently as illegal for Amish “drivers” as English.
Patrols were stepped up after an Amish elder’s property was vandalized when he confronted youths about their drinking and listening to radios.
Damn Amish kids.
All kidding aside, I covered the Def Leppard show at the Clip a few years back and there were a whole bunch of Amish kids there, absolutely wasted. I’d always thought the Rumspringa business took place in remote barns rather than a brightly-lit urban stadiums to the strains of “Rock of Ages.” Who knew.

Getting out of hand at a concert seems pretty radical for Amish kids, but it's not really new. There's a book called "The Amish Year". It was written in the fifties. The author writes about Amish kids hanging out in intercourse on Saturday nights and generally raising cain till the residents called the cops. On one such night when the State trooper showed up the Amish kids raced their buggies around his car in a circle, yelling and screaming. The officer left without arresting anyone or dispersing the crowd.
Can you imagine that happening today? |
