Good lord. As noted in the Santorum video thread, GOP National Committee Chairman gave an interview to GQ Magazine - Josh Marshall tells us the interview was done Feb. 24, before the Rush kerfluffle - in which he said he was pro-choice, though he thinks states should be able to decide whether to permit abortions on their own - the federalist approach.
But now we got Steele “walking back” that remark, according to the Politico:
RNC Chairman Michael Steele said today that despite telling an interviewer he supports “individual choice” and state-level decisions on abortion, he in fact opposes abortion and supports a Constitutional ban.
Steele said in a statement through an RNC spokesman:
I am pro-life, always have been, always will be.
I think Republicans used to call this a “flip flop.”
But what a farce Steele is turning out to be.
You see why that is. He clearly believes some things that just don’t gibe with the Republican base - and the base is always right.
Steele is proving himself weak. You know, dude - if you believe something, and you believe the party itself needs to evolve, stand up and fight for what you believe in. But no; Steele instead goes the shrinking violet route. Which is why I suspect he’ll soon be replaced with someone more ideologically consistent with the base. In which case there shall be no reform whatsoever for the Republican Party.
In which case, the time into the wilderness is only beginning.
