Santonio and Phelps, dial 420

Was thinking about this one over the weekend, as the Steelers’ Santonio Holmes caught the game-winning touchdown pass in the Super Bowl, and in fact shone that entire final drive - four catches, 73 yards on that drive alone. And Super Bowl MVP honors.
But, per the Michael Phelps bong hit photos, Santonio Holmes has also had his issues with Teh Demon Weed.
And so it raises a question. Certainly, marijuana is illegal; certainly it’s then wrong for Holmes and Phelps and anyone else to indulge in it.
Yet at the same time, can it legitimately be said that smoking marijuana inhibits athletic performance?
Notes Sullivan:
The argument, so far as I can tell, is: a) marijuana destroys people, renders them incapable of productive and worthwhile lives; b) yes, the new president and the greatest Olympic swimmer of all time have smoked pot; c) but that means we have to punish them all the more!
Because they disprove the lies required to sustain the Prohibition.
As a parent, I can’t quite come out in favor of legalization (though decriminalization, yes). But what do you tell your kid about Phelps, when he says - Hey dad, how can he smoke dope and win all those gold medals?

It is NOT the government's job to protect me from myself. (And vast amounts of money would be saved by reducing the need for prisons and law enforcement. Not to mention additional income taxes and sales taxes remitted...) BUT I don't use the money as a justification for legalization, because money has nothing to do with morality......it's more about the "victimless" part...Why are the 'conservatives" for all this...I thought they wanted SMALLER government?.... |

Shiffty 2/3/09 10:13 PM | The difference between Phelps and Santonio doing drugs and the rest of us is that they have incredible talent that we do not have. They have enough talent that absuing their bodies still allows them to stay on top of their games. If they take it to far then the toll will show. Darryl Strawberry is one of the saddest cases in sports. A man with what appeared to be unlimited talent but he destroyed himself with drugs. Even talent has its limits.
You will always be better if you do not harm your body with drugs and alcohol. The degradation can be minor or severe depending on the amount ingested. As far as not hurting anyone I would disagree in my job. I work in a factory with a lot of fork truck traffic, people and some large volumes of chemicals. Unlike alcohol which is metabilized away relatively shortly marijuana can stay with a person for longer periods of time. They may not seemed stoned but their reactions and decision making will be impaired. Do you want a person on a low level buzz driving a fork truck near a 5000 gallon alchol tank or how about running near where you are working? The concept that it can only hurt me is actually false. |
