Why we’re here

January 27th, 2009 3:00 pm · 12 comments

Via Sullivan, this would be Kathryn Jean Lopez:

We’re a nation not just where you are free to believe or not to believe; we’re a nation founded for Him — so we could praise Him, so we could do His will.

Historically dubious though this may be, you see the implications.

If we were a nation founded by and for Christians, then certainly we need to remain a nation for Christians. And everyone else - well, you know, sure: you can stay. So long as you keep in mind who’s in charge.

Sorry, but the founding fathers were not christians as you know Christianity to be. Most of them were, at best, deists. This means they believe in a "god" who set things in motion and then backed-off, allowing things to take their natural course.

The founding fathers did not reverence Jesus nor adhere to anything like modern American evangelical fundamentalism, which I presume you believe to be "the one true faith." Because I believe there is a core of arrogance at the center of your statement, I don't hold out hope that this post will make any impact you you. I do love to be proven wrong, though, and who knows? Maybe you'll surprise me.

America is not nor was it ever a Christian nation. Our founders, by your standards, are all in hell and burning for eternity.

I am a Christian and in ministry, and I do not appreciate the way that ignorant people like you tarnish the image of the Church. Take the time to do some research, maybe read a book, talk to someone different from you -and do these things before you bother talking in public about a nation "for Him." Jesus said to give to Caesar what is Caesars, and to God what is God's.

Caesar was bisexual. That means that he did men, too. Are you okay with that?
