Big meany Obama!

January 23rd, 2009 2:11 pm · 39 comments

Cry me a frickin’ river:

On the plane, no longer Air Force One but now Special Air Mission 28000, they talked about the speech. George W. Bush, the former president, was heading home to Texas with his inner circle, having just left the Capitol, where his successor first thanked him for his service and then proceeded to discredit it.

The Bush team had worked assiduously to make the transition smooth for the incoming President Obama and stayed out of the way as he used the postelection period to take leadership of the economy even before being sworn in. And now, as far as some of them were concerned, the new president had used his inaugural lectern to give the back of the hand to a predecessor who had been nothing but gracious to him.

“There were a few sharp elbows that really rankled and I felt were not as magnanimous as the occasion called for,” Karen Hughes, a longtime Bush confidante, said in an interview. “He really missed an opportunity to be as big as the occasion was and, frankly, as gracious as President Bush was as he left office.”

Dan Bartlett, another top adviser, used similar language. “It was a missed opportunity to bring some of the president’s loyal supporters into the fold,” he said. Marc A. Thiessen, the chief White House speechwriter until this week, added: “It was an ungracious inaugural. It was pretty clear he was taking shots.”

Yeah. It was. But what they’re not getting is that Obama was elected as a repuduation of Bush. If Americans were pleased with the job he’d done - they’d have elected another Republican. But Americans on the whole are displeased, extremely displeased, with what has happened to their country these past eight years.

Well, except over at Fox, where these past eight years have been the greatest period of American history bar none ever!

This puts me in mind of the parents of a poor student who complain that the teacher read the test grades out loud in front of the entire class and humiliated poor Georgie (who had gotten a low grade.) ...You see it's all the teachers fault...not the fact that poor Georgie didn't study for the test, and missed a lot of school because he had a lot of unexcused absences...AND this is the same crowd who lament that schools just aren't what they used to be, and students like Georgie are coddled... and wonder how these kids will ever be able to function in the real world?...because the real world judges by real accomplishments..

Not that I care that much for GWB, I don't.
Still this just goes to show what kind of folks moved into the White House. Gracious is one thing the Obama's are not and never will be. dry.gif

There is no argument that America is happy to see Bush go.
But what strikes me about Gil's post is that Gil wants you to believe that is was Bush who had bad things to say about Obama, and that Bush was complaining about the speech.

Yes it was from the one member of his staff who complained.

Did Gil Smart actually read this article or was he salivating so much he just had to get it posted just as fast as he could?

Mr. Bush took it in stride, according to those who saw him on Tuesday. “He grabbed me and said, ‘That was a hell of a speech,’ ” Mr. Emanuel said. Ms. Hughes said Mr. Bush had said “not a word” disparaging the speech during the plane ride to Midland, Tex.

There were a few sharp elbows that really rankled and I felt were not as magnanimous as the occasion called for,” Karen Hughes, a longtime Bush confidante, said in an interview. “He really missed an opportunity to be as big as the occasion was and, frankly, as gracious as President Bush was as he left office.”

School of Olbermann, continued.

Gil, the problem is that an inauguration is not the time for politics. To me that whole 20 minutes of "history" could have come off so much better. I'm a Christian so I was not offended by Rick Warrens invocation using Jesus’ name but I know there was a fair number of people who were so why was it needed? Then the oath was screwed up for nothing but human error. Then you have the blatantly childish attempt at humor that ended up offending more people in the benediction even bringing about cries of racist. The only redeeming moment of this "pinnacle of history" was Yo-Yo Ma's rendition of "tis a gift to be simple".

I guess I had too great of expectations for Obama's speech. I was looking for a JFK "ask not what ...." or something that would be memorable but there was just not much there except more politics. If there was ever a moment to celebrate the high road this was it but that was not the road chosen.

I think the point was they should have let people know they weren't really playing. I understand the weather would have messed up the sound, etc. Simply say that then, don't play it off as it was them actually playing. IT was beautiful just the same. Its the same thing that happened with Ashley Simpson and Pavoratti. It was still their own voices on the track, they were just lip syncing. I think Joe was just going alittle overboard to prove a point. biggrin.gif

Of course there is Rev. It's typical of Gil to paste what suits him. It was made to sound like the whole Bush team were acting like babies...but he neglected to point out Bush's Comments to Emanuel which complimentary to Obama's speech. The negative comments were blown out of proportion to suit Gill's needs.

I am not putting down Obama, just Gil's Olbermann style of reporting.

You are not going to see it unless you are true pluralist who can see both sides of an issue. I would not expect you to understand. But you could read the original post that Gil quoted to get an idea. All I'm saying is it was a perfectly forgettable performance by many involved at a perfectly historical event.

Personally, I don't care that they played "Live or Memorex." I think it would have been weird to make some sort of announcement beforehand.

The negative comments were out of proportion in the entire NYT article! I might see your point if Gil didn't link to the article and only provided the excerpt, but get real. He distorted nothing.

You supported Mr. Obama. He won. He's even been sworn in. But you are still so focused on all things Bush and all things Republican. It sure reads like obsession.

Why don't you ever write anything positive about anything you are actually for instead of against?

The above lines from Obama's speech are pretty memorable.

You have to remember that his speech writer is only 27 years old. He cannot possibly create something totally profound. However, I believe it was a good speech.

I am also wondering how soon after such past presidential speeches, the phrases we remember were promoted. Did the famous one-liners become household words immediately following the speeches, or much later? huh.gif

If it was too cold to play, then they shouldn't have played and pretended that they were playing. They just shouldn't have appeared then....or just play it out of tune a bit...big deal! What a sham! No one knew ahead of time it was going to be that cold. In extreme temps., there's a risk that if they played the instruments the strings could snap or some of the instruments could even crack. You can't "just play a little out of tune."

I wouldn't compare the amount of preparation that went into the performance for the inauguration to a performance by Ashlee Simpson, but if that's how you comprehend it, be my guest.
