Persecution!

Regarding this Alliance Defense Fund (right-wing Christian organization) ad:
Sullivan writes:
The importance of portraying 2 percent of the population as far more powerful than the 98 percent and the need to keep that 2 percent from destroying civilization - and allegedly making Christianity illegal - has some interesting historical forebears.
Well, it’s not just right-wing Christians; that’s a hallmark of the right wing in general, the persecution complex, the siege mentality. They’re victims!

This has nothing to do with persecution or being victims.
It is about defending the constitutional rights of Christians, something you so desperately would love to deny them, simply because you disagree.
It is about… - Defending the constitutional right of free speech. - Defending the constitutional right to peaceful protests. - Defending the right of business owners to run their businesses according to their beliefs. - Defending the constitutional right to vote one’s conscience.

You know the ACLU would agree with you Goldilocks...they fight for the same rights for Non-Christians and Christians alike...yet in this ad they are shown as 'the opposition"...what's that about? Because this ad isn't really about constitutional rights...it's about implementing NEW laws to impose a Christian value set to a secular society... |

The ad addresses free speech, the right to peaceful protests, the right to vote one's conscience. These are not new laws. They are as old as the constitution.

and "government" supression of these rights is not now, nor has it ever been, limited to Christians and their causes...just ask the anti war.or anti globalization crowd how they've been treated by the "police state" lately? The bigger issue is NOT supression of Christains and their ideals...it's supression of rights by the government...but this ad appeals directly to the cause as a societal victim mentality...Christian ideals against "them"...and the "them" is not the gov't but the secular members of the same society being denied the same rights... |

Okay, I see your point. Secular society is denying Christians certain rights afforded them by the constitution. Does that make them victims. I suppose it does depending how you look at it.
However using that same logic, aren't all the same sex couples who want the privilege of marriage doing the same thing. Crying "persecution" "victims"? |

I think you missed my point. What rights has "Secular society" denied Christians? |

Denied Christians the right to use public facilities that are open to other groups. Denied Christians from expressing their faith in the workplace. Prevent Christian Students the right to pray and express their beliefs in public schools. Prevent the freedom to peaceful protests
This happens all the time, but it never makes the news, like it would if it involved some gay people. Go to ADF's site and read for yourself what cases they defended and won, based on existing laws and the constitution.

FYI , In comnparison to the horrible persecution that goes on around the world, American Christians aren't truly being persecuted and neither are same sex couples who are denied the privilege of marriage.

Scout 12/18/08 10:54 AM | Go to ADF's site and read for yourself what cases they defended and won, based on existing laws and the constitution. Part of the problem, Goldi, is that not all Christians practice their faith in identical ways. Most mainstream Christians do not approve of polygamy, yet there are some Mormons (who ARE Christians) who believe polygamous marriages to be a tenet of their faith. There are churches (and I do not mean MCC's) who perform Holy Unions for LGBT couples, and do not believe it is going against the Bible. We don't allow plural marriages, therefore we are infringing on the rights of those Mormons, yes? Every group can see themselves being "persecuted" in some way; it is all the POV or lens you are looking through, IMO |

Denied Religious Groups the right to use public facilities... Denied Religious Groups from expressing their faith in the workplace... Prevent All students the right to pray ...in public schools.. Prevent many groups the freedom to peaceful protests...
These have all been attempts (many bungled) to decouple government from religion in an attempt to protect the rights of the minorities among us...This may offend you ..but it is NOT persecution of Christians and I don't think it's 'personal"...Are you ready for your children to face Mecca regularly and get down on their knees? I know I'm not, but there are communities where Muslims are becoming the majority...the view looks very different from the minority perpective..My children can pray ANYTIME...but their prayers are between them and their GOD...they don't need to make a show of it or a school designated show of it...and they don't need to spend work time or school time converting others or being converted..... |

As I said previously, IMO in comparison to nations around the world I don't think any Americans are being persecuted, no matter what their beliefs or opinions.
Here are some examples of true persecution.

Agreed. But I thought we were comparing apples to oranges, not apples and oranges to dates. |

Please show the facts behind these........ 1. Denies the right to use public facilities that are open to other groups.......> who? Dont even say the Boy Scouts , they are allowed to use any facilities as long as they are not breaking any laws or ordinances and pay fare market price.
2.Denies christians from expressing their faith in the work place ----- that is not government that is a private matter - companies have this right, they are "privately owned" companies , if the christian that works there doesnt like it they can get another job. Christian buisnesses can denie jobs to those that dont beleive as they do , its done all the time.
3.Prevents christian students the right to pray and express their beliefs in school. --- no , christian students can pray anytime they want. Schools just can not set a certain time for students to pray because not all students are christians.
4.Prevent the freedom of peaceful protest - where? protests take place all the time christian and non christian. It is a right given to you or any other person by the constitution. Name a time and place where this was not allowed. As long as all laws are being followed it cant be stopped. |

I think this reference is to holding up pictures of aborted fetuses along highways. Personally, I'm for being able to protest, but like alot of people, disgusted by the method. |
Scalewoodman 12/18/08 3:52 PM | Thankfully, even President Obama uses the word 'INCLUSION' when trying to overcome the controversy in choosing Rick Warren** to deliver his Invocation. To overcome the 'anti Christians' he has to defend his open mindedness.
This is what we are down to in the National discourse!
** Why? Because as an Evangelical, he does not endorse the idea of gay marriage or wanton murder of fetuses. It has nothing to do with his Christianity-- rather he's been identified as the 'enemy' by the social liberals. |

nothing illegal about this as long as it is done in the right of way |
