What ‘the people’ want

Might be the first time I’ve ever agreed with Dick Cheney:

That was the message Vice President Dick Cheney brought to a closed-door Senate GOP lunch Wednesday, reportedly warning that it’ll be “Herbert Hoover” time if aid to the industry was rejected, according to a senator familiar with the remarks.

I’m telling you, this is how it’s going to go down.

“The people” don’t want bailouts! And Republicans, responding to “the people,” will ensure that no bailout occurs.

One or more of the automakers will go down, deepening the recession. Potentially unleashing the domino theory we touched on yesterday; cascading economic failure. And then “the people” will be very, very angry!

But by then it may be too late.

We are at, in this country, a historic populist moment. “The people” have spoken - but I’m not confident that “the people” have any idea what they’re talking about. What do “the people” know of economics? Have “the people” looked three years down the road to see what this decision portends?

Doesn’t matter. “The people” know what they want; and perhaps their collective wisdom will enable us to ride out the economic storm.

If not, our modern populist movement dies with Detroit.
