Who’ll defend Plaxico?

Hm. Been following the saga of Plaxico Burress, the former Steeler and current (for now) New York Giants WR who managed to shoot himself in the leg with an unlicensed Glock over the weekend, and now has been suspended for four games. He could go to jail.
Sullivan picks up a quip that I think is a bit too glib, but gets at a larger point:
Where is the statement expressing outrage from the NRA that a humble American gun owner like Plaxico, who was just trying to protect himself and his family by carrying a hand gun, is being mercilessly persecuted by The Man and his Draconian gun control laws?
The answer is that the gun, again, was unlicensed. Which means Burress wasn’t being a law-abiding American while he was packing it at that nightclub.
But here’s one for the gun enthusiasts: Had the gun been properly licensed - would, or should, this even be a controversy?

His wife is a lawyer, maybe she could defend him or maybe she should have given him a little advice before he went out there with a piece. I don't think he can say he was defending his family by going to a nightclub armed. How much does he make? It's not too hard to hire a bodyguard. And what if he got into a situation where he would have had to pull a gun out? He would have instantly been in big trouble, no matter what. |
