In the bunker

Sarah Palin won’t actually be speaking to the press for two weeks.

I’m beginning to rethink the Oprah thing. Maybe Oprah should have her on, now - and grill the hell out of her.

The Business of Being Oprah

http://www.mutualofamerica.com/articles/Fo...4_08/Oprah1.asp

The Oprah show is clearly the core of her business, contributing the lion's share of revenues--some $300 million last year--to Harpo. It airs in 107 countries and has held its No. 1 spot in U.S. daytime talk for 16 years despite challenges from at least 50 rivals. It's a mass-market megahit that appeals to the middle-aged, middlebrow audience that advertisers such as Procter & Gamble, Sears, and Wal-Mart are eager to reach. But it's hardly her only venture.

Her two-year-old magazine, O, The Oprah Magazine, is the most successful startup ever in the industry. Last year it raked in more than $140 million in revenues. According to her joint-venture partner, Hearst Magazines President Cathleen Black, it is "significantly profitable," a remarkable feat given that successful magazines generally take five years to turn a profit. In an advertising recession so tough that titles such as Mademoiselle and Talk have disappeared, O's ad sales actually rose 43% in the first four issues of the year, compared with the same four last year. Sarah Palin is not running for the VP slot in order to gain notoriety via Oprah or any othe rtalk shows. Something that very few people have noticed is that the Repubican ticket is not rushing to appear on media shows - unlike Michelle Obama dancing on "Ellen" or chatting on "The View".

I want a president and VP - not a media star or fashion model - in charge of the USA.

Republicans most certainly do want Palin to be a media star. They just want it to be scripted, until she is 'ready'; which means she is not ready now for an interview; which means she certainly is not ready to be VP or President. While she may be able to talk about herself and all things Alaska, she has no experience on most of the national and international issues on which she can rely for an interview such as Meet the Press, Wolf Blitzer or even Larry King.

When she was asked about her son going to Iraq, she said (paraphrase) I hope they have a plan and it better not be about oil. blink.gif

If she bombed on an interview, I think a large portion of her support would evaporate. The Republicans simply cannot take that chance. If they could, they would only allow her to introduce McCain, give scripted speeches and make joint interviews, so McCain could correct her much like Lieberman did for McCain.

I guess there are only so many things you pick up as mayor of a town with 54 employees, 5400 people and a $6 million budget.
