Stormy weather

I wonder if Obama and the rest of the Democratic Party on the whole - but especially the bigwigs - realize that if Gustav is half the storm it sounds like it might be, they ought to be not out campaigning early next week, but pitching in in the Gulf states - as true leaders, not to mention intelligent politicans, might.

Particularly if the Republicans go ahead and yuk it up in the Twin Cities. But I’m sure the GOP will express heartfelt concerns in between trying to lacerate Democrats - which will make them look exactly as small as they are.

Or perhaps they can cancel their convention and lose whatever momentum they might have gained with Palin’s appointment.

The first concerns of the country this weekend need to be about the storm, and the people who will be in the way of it. Maybe it won’t be as damaging as Katrina; maybe people will be able to get out of the way, maybe they’ll have something left when they return. You might donate to the American Red Cross or similar groups that are mobilizing to help out. Even if Gustav spares the coast completely - this has to be the most frightening thing that happens to people in their lives (as the Times-Picayune’s Nola.com notes, Ray Nagin is calling this the “mother of all storms,” and evacuees are being told to “prepare as if you’ll never return“).

But as the weather has had an effect on politics in the past, so might it this time. McCain and the GOP may need a bigger umbrella.

It is no more likely, IMO, that Obama would have canceled his coronation than that McCain will cancel his ... Obama simply lucked out on the timing of the coronation versus the storm. Obama didn't have to make that choice, so it is easy to look at it and say what the Dems would have done, much like you pointing out that Obama didn't vote for the war, and ignore the fact he wasn't in office TO vote ... and we can make hindsight any shade of rosy pink we want.
Gil, your vehement disgust of the Republican party is starting to get real old ... even to some of us who are also liberals. You call them wingers ... yep, some may well be, but you are just as much a nutty winger the other way.
I used to look forward to your weekly column, but since coming on TB, I have lost respect for your journalistic viewpoint, since it is beyond skewed, beyond biased. You are, in your own way, as much a hate-monger as Fred Phelps.

Mr. Smart,
Could you explain why news outlets aren't covering the preemptive police raids on potential protesters of the RNC in St. Paul? See the following link. This is VERY alarming and police sate/facsist like http://www.commondreams.org/view/2008/08/31 I thought since you were a newspaper man you might share some insight on the lack of coverage???

Thank you Scout. As a Republican, I am outnumbered on here and appreciate your defense.

What gets me is, billions of tax payer money gets spent on idiots that live ten feet under sea level and still sinking. People living on the ocean with sea levels rizing or people living in desserts that can't raise crops. People living on faultlines, in the dry woods or on unstable ground or next to rivers.

Hey folks nature is nature you can trick it, move it, even change it, but when it wants it's way you can't do a damn thing about it.

A category 3 is nothing to sneeze at but it is far from a 5 and it looks like it is hitting at very deserted sections of the coast. They are saying the levees are in danger but this is nothing like Katrina.

Maybe prayer works after all, Joe.

Democrat apologizes for Gustav joke

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) -- A former Democratic National Committee chairman apologized Sunday for suggesting that Hurricane Gustav's expected arrival as Republicans prepare to open their national convention is a sign God favors Democrats.

During a flight from Denver to North Carolina last Friday, Don Fowler -- who was DNC chair in 1995 and 1996 -- was recorded telling a fellow passenger that it appears Gustav will make landfall on Monday.

"That just demonstrates that God is on our side," Fowler added, according to a video posted on YouTube under the headline: "Fowler Fouls: Hurricane is God's Favor To Democrats."

The person who recorded the conversation is not identified. The person whom Fowler was talking to is not visible in the video, but was identified on the conservative Web site www.redstate.com as Rep. John Spratt, D-S.C.

On Sunday, Fowler told The Associated Press that he was making fun of comments made by the Rev. Jerry Falwell, who after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, said the attacks were God's punishment for abortion, homosexuality and other sins.

"This is a point of national concern. I think everybody of good will has great empathy and sympathy for people in New Orleans," Fowler said. "Most religious people are praying for people in New Orleans. There is no political connotation to this whatsoever. This was just poking fun at Jerry Falwell and the nonsensical thing he had said several years ago."

Fowler said if anyone was offended, he apologized.

"I don't believe in a God that's vengeful. I believe in a God that's compassionate," he said.

South Carolina GOP chairman Katon Dawson called Don Fowler's comments "disappointing and despicable."

"A storm is not a partisan event and that is what they've done. I am outraged," Dawson said, speaking by telephone from St. Paul, Minn., where the Republican National Convention is scheduled to start Monday, but may be altered because of concern over Gustav.

Lets just put Michael Moore, Phil Graham, Keith Olberman, and Dobson's talking head in a barrel and shoot them. Oh wait. We need to keep Phil Graham out, he's most likely going into McCain's cabinet if elected.

Could we add Fred Phelps to the barrel, pretty please??
