Pump up the Stupid

I like how, in this clip, Newt Gingrich completely ridicules the idea that you, as an invidual, can or even should do anything to try and conserve energy. Once more we come to the official GOP line, which is that conservation is for weaklings.
But what I also like is the insinuation that THE ONLY SOLUTION FOR OUR ENERGY WOES IS TO DRILL!!! Does anyone ask these Fox News automatons: How much of the energy we extract in the U.S. remains in the U.S.? If we drill in ANWR, does that mean we get to keep the energy in the U.S.?
Said it before, say it again: I don’t outright oppose drilling as a stopgap measure, but to ridicule the notion that Americans individually ought to modify their behavior is indicative of the recklessness with which the right continues to approach this issue. Loony tunes indeed.

follow the path of Libdom and have to take the statements a step further.
I guess the numbers assume that every vehicle on the road is running on low air pressure and needs a tuneup.
Not very likly, but in wonderful Obama world with paid screamers at his functions, it will solve the energy crisis and replace the need for off shore drilling.
However, since estimates of significant tire underinflation affect only about a quarter of the cars on road -- as we noted above with the NHTSA statistics -- and it’s highly unlikely that 100% of the cars are in need of tune- ups at any given time, the maximum savings amount is probably closer to 10%, Verrastro says.
"So the production offset is more likely to approach 800 thousand barrels per day – a tidy sum and a worthwhile target for savings, but not equal to OCS output," he rules. "Finally, without knowing what production volumes could be expected from lifting the ban on OCS drilling moratoria, it’s impossible to assert that taking these fuel savings actions would exceed future offshore oil volumes, and in fact, one might argue that the combination of achieving these savings AND developing new supply would doubly enhance US energy security."

So within a couple of days, Obama has positioned himself with these wonderful tid
bits of hope.(based on polling)
1.We don't have to drill because we can get the same amount of oil by inflating our tires and tunu ups.
2. Every family will get a $1000.00 check. The money will come from Oil Comapny profits. Socialism income redistribution. WOnder how that would effect shareholders includiong retirement accounts with mutual funds??
3. After waking up and realizing most Americans want drilling if not for prices to drop bit just for National Security, he is now OK with Drilling! What will we hear tomorrow? I can hardly wait for the laughs watching Obama's campaign self destruct. All McCain has to do is stand and watch!

I think it's a horrible idea that goes against capitalism. Like them or not we need oil companies to explore and refine crude. Otherwise, guess what? you don't get oil or gas.
And how is the check supposed to be spent? On energy? OK, someone explain how the Feds are going to see that it is used for that as opposed to buying a flat screen or some other item?
Do we need a watchdog gov't agency just for that? That alone would be too expensive to create and maintain.
I am not against legislating that we allow drilling off shore and ANWR. Just put very high taxes on oil that is exported. The oil that we own will stay here and we do not support our enemies by filling up our tanks. But Pelosi/Reid...no way! They like it that we are paying $3.65 (Today's price for me)
If I get one, I'll buy Government Savings Bonds keep them for future grand kids.

Hey if you don't want the rebate give it to me. |
BigKahuna 8/2/08 7:40 PM | Someone explain to me why oil companies are not drilling where they already have permits to do so. Why are they saying that the public will suffer if they can't drill off-shore?
There are really people out there stupid enough to believe that if they get permission to drill off-shore our gas prices will be dropping back under $2 a gallon within a couple of weeks. I have heard it with my own ears and I shake my head in utter amazement.
there are a lot of americans out there that really don't have a clue. And they will vote for McCain because he tells them that off-shore drilling is the way to go. Of course he is the buddy of the oil companies, and of course he is not telling the people just how long it would take. He's the grin and wink candidate; but people should be asking themselves just what is he grinning and winking about. The oil companies are taking the american public on one he!! of a ride. They're never going to seriously research alternate energy; THERE'S NOT ENOUGH PROFIT!!!!!!
As a republican I am seriously questioning McCain's judgement. He looks and talks like a puppet these days. I wonder who's puppet he has become.
He says he is enjoying the ads he is putting out there; I think McCain would be much better suited writing for "South Park" than being given the honor of becoming president. He is making a fool of himself and he's so clueless that he thinks its funny. IMO he has become a dishonorable shell of the man he once was. Sad & desperate.

So, you won't actually refuse it or, like, just send it back? You'll keep it, like everyone else, just with more enlightened intentions? Nice. |

Well, ya better add Obama to your posts, because he's getting the same feelings as Mccain. |

Or perhaps there will be a means test like with the stimulus check, or the IRS will keep it to apply toward your estimated tax (which also happened with the last supposed check).
New Deal? FDR? Wealth redistribution? |

well they had the foresight to see what it would bring. look around. they were right.
who among ye would rather be paying 2 bucks for gas and not have received their tax "cut"?
of course deny it htrice before the cock crows but this mess we are in was all forewarned.
but then denial is for the deniers not for the consumption of those who knew better.
it's just getting so hard to come up with new excuses these days.
and no one is fooled just assuaged.

podunk 8/3/08 7:09 AM | They didn't have the foresight to see high gas prices.
They were afraid of their precious programs not being funded.
Unfortunately the Republicans were stupid and didn't slash spending with those tax cuts (OMG! I blamed Republicans for something. Are you impressed?).
So the answer now is to elect the Democrats.
So we can pay higher taxes AND $5 per gallon for gas.
What a win-win situation for our country!
Ok, you have convinced me.
Obama gets my vote. |

At least I woud reinvest it in the country. Send it back? The dumasses will send it to a dead person.
And what will you do with your free $ CD?
