Iraqi PM backs Obama plan

July 19th, 2008 8:20 pm · 24 comments

Iraqi prime minister Maliki: Obama is right when he talks about withdrawing troops in 16 months.

News prompts memorable response from one GOP consultant who occasionally advises McCain. And that memorable response is correct.

It has not been a good week for John McCain. With Bush talking about “time horizons” - hmmm, “time horizons” sounds suspiciously like “time frame,” don’t you think - and approaching Iran diplomatically, McCain now looks like the outlier in terms of his uber-hawkishness; he now advocates a hard line that even the administration seems to be abandoning. Everyone’s converging, it seems - except the presumptive GOP nominee, who now finds himself in the position of telling Iraqis what they should want, and insisting that whatever it is they do want, they’re not going to get.

That didn't take long for Maliki to say he was 'mis-understood'. Yet is is no secret that a timeline for withdrawal of US troops was one of the stumbling blocks of the SOFA negotiations.

You do have to admire the acrobatic wordsmithing the Bush Administration is doing to avoid saying "timeline", with the latest being "joint aspirational time horizons".

It seems the McCain 50 year plan is not going over too well with the Iraqis.

I am sure that by November, Bush and McCain will declare 'victory' in Iraq.

I heard last night on I think washington week that Iraq wants US to understand that Iraq is not N Korea or Germany. Permanent bases in Iraq are not on the table even though this is what McCain wants Iraq is against such a plan.

To declare a 'victory' and have it agreed upon by the world would be a great thing. It doesn't matter if it is done during Bush or Obama presidency. A 'victory' is a huge mental plus for the U.S. in the world and especially in that region. This is why we didn't want to pack up and leave (like the Democrats wanted) and give a perception of defeat.

To not think that we would have troops for a long period of time is ridiculous. Even Obama says we will. All his talk about a withdraw are for 'combat' troops and he acknowledges we will leave 'support' troops for quite some time.

Obama was right. So much for McCain's charge that Obama is naive on foreign policy.

To spend billions of dollars just so america can have "mental plus" is rediculous which is why republicans are in such disfavor. I hope republicans are enjoying this recession brought on by this feel good policy of victory in Iraq.\ but presonally I would have rather skipped the whole recession thing and accepted a mental negative. The mental black eye that we have around the world as a result of Bush's policies will not be erased by a mental victory in Iraq.

Obama gave an antiwar speech that nobody recorded or remembers but that was enough for some to choose him over Hillary who voted yes on the AUMF.
Funny, that the few votes he decided to make in the Senate, during breaks in his presidential campaigning, were for funding the war he was against. Now he is on record as being for the same type of troop withdraw plan as Hillary instead of yanking them as soon as he took his hand off the Bible in January.
What a guy. I'll bet the Obama cultists are pleased rolleyes.gif

Actually Jesus said it first. Not that you'd recognize his teachings or follow his words, to begin with.

What does a discussion about the bible have to do with the war in Iraq.

My best story in the bible is where this guy forgives one of his workers debts and the guy goes out and harangues one of his workers to pay off his debt. So the big boss decides to teach him a lesson so he tortures him until he pays back all his debt thus we can conclude that the bible and God are OK with torture and being a christian nation we should torture Iraqi's until the Iraqi'spay us back for the cost of the war in Iraq. What less should a Christian nation do but follow the bibles explicit affirmation of the use of torture. Hey better yet lets enslave the Iraqi's since the bible is ok with slavery also how many Iraqi slaves equals $750 billion
