And this one from the Grateful Dead Movie - ain’t that America in its red, white and blue tye-dyed glory.
Lights going dim for a couple of days as we do the holiday Fourth thing; no internets, no computers at all. I might wish the same for you, along with some good weather for the firecrackers and burgers this weekend.

oh geez 7/4/08 11:54 AM | hmmm...why do I have a sudden hankering to smoke a joint? |
Nick Danger 7/4/08 2:19 PM | By far the best Dead concert I've ever seen was Watkins Glen summer 1973. Allman Bros & The Band played as well.
Damn, I'm old!

runutz 7/4/08 4:27 PM | My favorite, last show ever at JFK. Awesome second set.
Midpoint of a long holiday week, three of us in my pickup.
Real hot as I remember, sold beer and soda to cover the tickets.
I think I saw Amy Carter in line for the bathroom.

dragonrider 7/4/08 11:51 PM | But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven anymore.
They're already over crowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like Killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more

Sounds like a hella show, though.
I didn't get into the Dead until college, late '80s. By the time I started going to shows the scene was already disintegrating; I remember one night at the Star Lake Amphitheatre in Pittsburgh, '92, watching a whole bunch of fans pulling up the fence, streaming underneath. And thinking: Why are you doing this - you are screwing it up for everybody else!
But, that said - Best show would probably have to be the final tour, summer of '95, Three Rivers Stadium. Jerry on his last legs. Just before the 2nd set, clouds open up, the rain of the damned upon us; my brother and I, with rain ponchos, about 12 rows from the front - and the band comes out and opens with the Beatles' "Rain." Sublime.

Calico 7/7/08 10:17 AM | I was at the last show at JFK, too. And many others I can't remember, enough to qualifiy as legally insane
My husband and I have been listening to this song lately. I'm not sure who they were talking about when they wrote the song, but they it sure fits this president. I shake my head in disbelief, that "summertime done come and gone."
Excellent post.
Thanks Gil!

I was there. Vaguely remember the fence. Vividly remember one of the nights there was a feeling in the air after the last song, my boyfriend wanted to leave, I wanted to stay to see what was going to happen and then the fireworks went off (they meant more back then). Magical night. Almost quit my job on the spot to follow them on. Should have.

I was at both Star Lake shows that year. I only ever went to 6 shows when Jerry was alive, 2 more amalgamations of "The Dead" or some such since. Never seen Ratdog, though I'd like to; first heard Hot Tuna opening for The Other Ones at Star Lake, 98 or so.

harv1 7/7/08 10:37 PM | I'm probably the only 'old as dirt' person here who immediately turns the radio dial when I hear Jerry Garcia's voice.
Gotta say that Lancaster colleges brought in some of the best Motown acts back in the day. And some of the most fun I've ever had was traveling by train from Flagstaff to Chicago with the O'Jays back in the early eighties. Great guys, Eddie Levert was a hoot and we had the bar car going all night - our own "Love Train" concert. Man, these threads bring back memories... In DC, Philly, Lancaster, etc. etc. The music was everything. |

JGB was a great show too but the Dead isn't The Dead without Jerry, imo. Come to think of it, I think we almost did get fired that year for taking off so much. Didn't help that we took another friend and co-worker with us to a few.

I can't tell you how many times my mother rolled her eyes at the name Grateful Dead. She just thought they were awful. Then one day, I was listening to a Dead song, I can't remember which one, but my mother walked in the room somewhat dancing and said she liked this band, who was it? Well Mom, it's the band you think you hate, but apparently don't! She hasn't become a Dead head, but she'll never put the band down again.

Your Mom probably heard something like Touch of Gray or Scarlet Begonias. A couple of great ones. The Dead Channel is fantastic. I never get tired of the different versions of any tune. I am reading "Searching for The Sound", by Phil Lesh right now. Fantastic insight to the history of the band. I recommend it. Sometimes a little trippy, but it's the truth behind the band, Pigpen, how they got Micky to join the band, how the sound system was invented. Plus the fun these guys had!
I once saw the Dead in Boston Garden, with New Riders opening up. It was a bit of a fog, but it would have been around 73.
Listen to 'Henry" by the New Riders once in a while..you'll laugh away!
Gil - this is the most response to any music vids you posted. Fantastic!

More heads or quasi-heads around here than I would'a thunk.
I was never a Deadhead, more of a Dead fan. Actually enjoyed the scene as much/more than the shows; the vending situation, just the strange sights. Did collect some 45 bootlegs, tho, in the pre-"Dick's Picks" era. Have a Cornell University from '77 that's allegedly the first appearance of "Estimated Prophet" (different words). Show's just amazing; there's a Playing in the Band-into Space-into a just insane "The Wheel" - back into Space - back into "Playing."
Also have a radio broadcast of New Year's '89 with some great versions of songs off "In the Dark" - "West L.A. Fadeaway" - along with a killer "Wang Dang Doodle" and probably the best "Sugar Mag-Sunshine Daydream" I've heard. Good stuff.

twinmom 7/8/08 5:37 PM | One of the really nice things is that this is a band that actually encouraged taping of shows to share. You can get virtually any show you want simply by looking around and not have to worry about the legality of it. I have lots of tapes from trading back in the day. |

Absolutely right. They may be the only band that actually encouraged recording. I was always amazed at how many people had set up in the "recording section" at the shows. I have a bootleg album from a show in the early 70s (long before my "Dead" time). What a hoot!
Art - I think the only song my mother knew before the one she liked (and you may be right - could have been Touch of Gray or Scarlet Begonias - was Cocaine. Which of course she immediately labeled the band as some kind of drug music. I told her the scene may be "druggie" but the music is kind of an awesome mix of bluegrass, blues, and others.
