Step away from the vehicle

It’s Canadian, so what do they know. Hopefully not much:

A new forecast calls for gasoline prices to hit $7 (U.S.) a gallon in the next two years and oil to soar to $200 a barrel by 2010.

The report by CIBC World Markets also predicts there will be 10 million fewer cars on the road in the United States by 2012.

“Over the next four years, we are likely to witness the greatest mass exodus of vehicles off America’s highways in history,” Jeffrey Rubin, the lead author, wrote in Thursday’s report.

Interesting because even with the price of oil high as it is, you hear few people actually saying they might ditch the two-car ideal; we’d say we simply can’t. Our definition of “can’t” would certainly change with gas at $7 per gallon.

First thing we can all do is tell ourselves, our friends and family members to SLOW DOWN while driving, even if just 5mph, and be on the lookout for bikes, pedestrians, scooters, ect.

We need to make it safer, and improve the perception of safety, so we can all start using alternative modes where possible, even if we are in a development without sidewalks, for example, or we could possibly bike the two blocks to Turkey Hill for milk and bread.

It will take changes, big and small, and we shouldn't be doing this JUST to save money- there are a HOST of benefits from NOT DRIVING! I'm scootering to work, and noticing things I couldn't or didn't when in my car! It gets even better when you slow down to 3-4 mph!! You can chat with a neighbor, or the mailman, or spot the kids up to no good!

This statement has me puzzled as to how you are chatting with a neighbor or mailman while driving 3-4 MPH slower......
