The only thing we have to fear…

…is Iran:

In an interview with former UN ambassador John Bolton today, Fox News anchor Gregg Jarrett asserted that Iran’s Shahab missile “could actually hit — I think — some military installations in the United States.” …

<snip>

The current range of Iran’s Shahab missiles is said to be 1,200 miles, but the United States and Iran are much more than 1,200 miles apart. The approximate distance between Tehran and Washington, D.C. is actually 6,340 miles.

But who cares! They’ve got missles, aaiiiieeeeeeee….

This goes hand-in-hand with something Glenn Greenwald hit on the other day, about Newt Gingrich ranting about how the Supreme Court’s decision on detainee rights “could cost us a city.” Quoth Greenwald:

We better not allow people we seek to imprison for life to have access to a court — or require our Government to show evidence before it encages people for decades — otherwise . . . we’ll “lose a city.”

Casually threatening Americans with the loss of a city unless they allow their Government to violate core constitutional guarantees is deranged fear-mongering in its most unadorned form, exactly what every two-bit tyrant tells his country about why they must be deprived of basic liberties.

Is there any question at all that this is the Republican game plan in its entirety? We’re not talking prudence here, we’re talking all-out fearmongering, so over the top that it Jon Stewart likely has a hard time parodying it?

My question is, do average everyday Republicans believe this? Are Fox News viewers now quaking in their living rooms because they think Iran is going to be firing those ICBMs at the United States?
