Same sex marriage = Holocaust

May 23rd, 2008 10:38 am · 39 comments

Sure. Why not?

Reacting to the California Supreme Court’s decision overturing a same-sex marriage ban, the far right group Campaign for Children and Families compares county clerks issuing same-sex marriage licenses to Nazis gassing Jews during the Holocaust. Here’s what they say on their website, SaveCalifornia.com:

Ask your county clerk if they were a Nazi officer during WWII and had been ordered to gas the Jews, would they? At the Nuremberg trials, they would have been convicted of murder for following this immoral order.

Because, you know, love and hate are the same thing. At least for this crowd.

Teh Stupid, it burns.

OK, let me see if I've got this straight (no pun intended). Not only are gays permitted to not marry, but if you're a county clerk in CA and you issue them a marriage license you're as evil as a murderer? Am I reading that correctly?

Gotta love those nutcases on the far right and left, Campaign for Children and Families and Gil Smart.
I've come to the conclusion that marriage in a social/government context is meaningless, worthless and should be ignored. If you want to have a ceremony in your place of worship go nuts.
However, as far as any status that two people have because of a $40 court document and a $20,000 ceremony over two people who don't but live together, or two people who've never spoken to one another is worthless.
Let everybody pay the same share in taxes, forget this whole widower inherits the deceased wife's assets without penalty business
This solves a bunch of problems:
Marriage of convenience is moot.
Gay marriage is moot.
Stay at home parents are pretty rare, so since everyone works, many places "give" health bennies, we just divide it out between two people and everyone who's not married costs go down just a bit, while the health ins. industry's profits go up a bit.
Same-sex benefits is moot.
Divorce courts become ordinary civil courts.
Family law lawyers will still get plenty of business as people fight over their kids like flatware, but I don't think anything will change that.
Death benefits and death taxes are moot.
People might actually, I don't know, think about marriage as a pointless social institution that's only real purpose is to brand another person as property.
Nobody rides for free -- how about that?

I think this winger group is trying to draw a parallel, between Germans during WW2 that said they were only following orders, but know what they were doing was morally wrong and clerks that grant marriage licenses to gays and knowing in the clerk’s mind that what they were doing, in being a party to it, is morally wrong.

I guess if the clerks feel strongly they should step down.

I’m no longer surprised by all the wack jobs out there on the net, also no longer surprised that they are quoted by the main stream, that is if it makes a point for something or against it. Or to take the wacked out views of a person or small group that speaks out about something and lay that over everyone that speaks out against that position.

Gil would like his readers to believe that since wack jobs say stupid things about gay marriage, everyone against gay marriage is a wack job. blink.gif

They're conservatives, it doesn't have to make sense.

They say "government is inherently corrupt and inefficient" then go on to elect leaders who prove it. Then when confronted about it say "see we told ya"

Only problem is those in power know how to work the system to their benefit. They distract the "rubes" with mock outrage campaigns like "gay marriage" and WMDs in Iraq. While bankrupting the treasury all the while.

A rather uncomfortable shoe to wear isn't it LDB and Pericles ?

Gil clearly stated that these were far right comments, not mainstream conservatives, and it is clear who they are, but your knee-jerk reaction smells funny to me.

And it should. As we have been discussing on other topics here, this group represents a clear fringe view, but one that is highly organized and occasionally garners support from the community and from politicians. NOT bringing them to the attention of everyone is clearly a disservice, since it is particularly these groups who have managed to infiltrate mainstream conservative worldview and mission statements. Certainly not directly, but indirectly. The more the lines get pushed to the far right, the more the middle ground gets moved to the right, and so therefore the more the left will have to push to the left.

So where does the line get drawn between the wack jobs, the not-so-wacky-nut-jobs, and the not-at-all-wacky jobs?

Where does John McCain fit into this mix?

Wouldn't NOT issuing the licenses be more like the nazi's gassing the jews than ISSUING them would be? Issuing them is being fair to all people, not issuing them is discriminating against a minority, just like the nazi's did to the jews. It should be the other way around. If you are in a state that does NOT allow homosexual marriage, then you should ask if they were a Nazi officer during WWII and had been ordered to gas the jews (keep gays from marrying), would they?

Makes more sense that way.

You do have a good point. Abolish ALL civil marriage, don't give any tax benefits or other governmental recognition to it and be done with it. Problem solved. If people want to get married, they can get married in any church they like. There are churches that wed homosexual couples as well as heterosexual couples, everybody has the same shot at it.

I think you're on to something. If marriage can't be fair to everyone, then do away with marriage in the civil sense, leave it to the churches. That automatically gets rid of no fault divorce. It gets rid of alot of the crooked law positions, it gets rid of tons of red tape in our government. It would change the divorce rate to zero, since there's no marriage, there's no divorce. Real equality, problem solved.

I'd say that's exactly what bigots do. Look for minor faults to justify their bigotry, while ignoring all the good stuff.

All issues aside, Gil has been a bit hell-bent on marathon gay marriage articles lately. It's time for an intervention.

OK Gil, here's what we're gonna do. You are limited to ONE gay marriage/homosexual related article each month. We know they've been coming out weekly, sometimes every other day, but it's time to look at other issues as well. Not saying this isn't an important issue, it is, but we pretty much know where most people stand and the homophobic bigots are set in their ways and will continue with it for the next 10 years or more, in whatever nursing home they end up in. We won't change their minds because there's nothing left to change. The best we can do is educate younger Americans and give them a sense of equality and logic that was missed out on by a select few.

If you're not able to make it an entire month, we'll consider one every two weeks, but that's absolutely the bottom line for negotiations.

Perhaps you can revive some of the calls for impeachment either before the axis of evil leaves office in Jan 2009 or after they've gone. Some other good topics are the overlooked Larry Sinclair issues with Obama (focus on the drugs, not the sex), the Rezco trial, Rev Wright, maybe throw in the Bosnia gaffe along with 100 years in Iraq so it's fair and balanced.

A few abotion topics might switch it up a little, we've not hit on that for a while, and the Catholic Priest pedophile cases are always a big storyline. You could also consider sexism vs racism in elections and follow up with how choosing candidates based on their achievement is NOT a case of racism or sexism.

You could hit some convention center headlines, maybe a few articles about Pennsylvania's falling behind in technological advances and then there's always the schools in the area which provide fodder on a variety of topics.

At least give us two weeks without a gay related story just to catch our breath and then go for it again if you want.

I'm guessing your referring to the drag queens...but they are very limited in number compared to other events of this type, so it won't be too bad.

Uhhh...right there where he says it....and uhhhh...if you follow the little linky things...it takes you to their website (in just a few seconds) ...and uhhh...if you have been even remotely osmotically absorbing the news, you've heard the group's name before...and uhhh...am I missing something?

LOL you're awesome!

What you are missing is that he doen't have to say it is far right garbage. It is blatantly obvious.

Unless you are so far right it appears reasonable. laugh.gif

That's why he had to say it. On this forum, some ARE so far right that they think it appears reasonable!!!

Beth seems pretty cool. An intelligent lady who is able to stand up and speak her mind. There are actually quite a few on here and the number is growing. The loudest and most hateful are being outnumbered greatly and it's a refreshing change!

.....now if I could just stop taking the bait and arguing with them.... if it wasn't so darned fun, it would be much easier to do.

Reason: The capacity for logical, rational, and analytic thought; intelligence.

Progress: Steady improvement, as of a society or civilization

I think what you are experiencing is the very nature of "progressive" thought. In order to get the world to change and "progress" one must envision a world that may seem "unreasonable" to the masses, in spite of the fact that the very nature of this "progressive" vision is based upon logic, rationality, and analytic thought.

It's not our fault you want the world to spin backwards.

It would have been nice if you had a clue what was being discussed so you wouldn't make such a fool of yourself merely by attacking anything I happen to say when you see it in hopes of getting a jab in.

The comment was referring to the far right wing, so your reply makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Go ahead, I'm going to sit back and laugh at you now.

Oh, and just in case there was any doubt, I AM laughing AT you, not WITH you. smile.gif

pssst, you may want to translate that to "redneck-ese" so she'll understand it. She'll never be able to make out all those "big words" wink.gif

since the universe is curved maybe those on the far left and those on the far right are close enough to shake hands.

Good comment. smile.gif If they could only hold hands long enough and see the path each has trod and come to understand they are not so different after all.

Sproutingup, Thank you for the compliment.

We all have a boatload of hurt that we carry around with us from one thing or another and we certainly do not need well meaning "Christians" piling more on.

To those who "believe" I'll personally feel a lot more secure in letting God be the final judge. I'll trust His Mercy and Grace over my or anyone elses interpretation of the scriptures. I'll ignore those who already "know" who should receive His Grace and who should not. I will try not to deceive or be deceived by anyone scripturely and let it up to His prompting of my Spirit to convict me when I am.

I've had down right meaness from the "Christian Right" directed at my family from the local church we were forced to attend while growing up. Now they redirected that same hate from the "Divorced" and the "Divorced Childen"(probably b/c too many of "their own" now fell into that category!) to the Gays and their families and children.

Having said all that I'll end my soap_box.gif tirade with a piece of a song I remember from my youth:

"And Jesus said, "Come to the water, stand by my side; I know you are thirsty, you wont be denied. I felt every tear-drop when in darkness you cried, And I strove to remind you that for those tears I died."
