Equality elicits a yawn

May 15th, 2008 2:55 pm · 190 comments

And so I’m sitting in a restaurant in a rural part of Lancaster County when the news flash comes across Headline News:

California’s top court overturns gay marriage ban

Far less grumbling than I would have expected, to tell the truth. “Isn’t everything legal in California?” the waitress joked.

“You can’t even smoke in a bar, but men can marry men?” asked another customer.

But most barely looked up from their hamburgers and chili. Which I took, maybe, as a sign that despite all the sound and fury surrounding this issue, as far as some people are concerned: eh.

A generation from now, my kids and your kids will wonder how anyone could have had a different reaction.

Now everyone knows why we need a constitutional amendment. And why civil unions or anything like it are a mistake, California had a very progressive same sex union provision and look how that worked out for them.

Sen. Brubaker should reintroduce the amendment, now, today.

No quarter / no prisoners! wink.gif

Little D

You are the prisoner. You enslave yourself with hatred. You look for people you can hate because you have no love of yourself. You see no joy in life and when you do you try to squash it. Why should others be happy when you are not. There is so much in life that is great but you will never see it because you will always be searching for evil. You want to make a difference in this world, this isn't it. Pick one thing that is positive, that actually helps people instead of hurts them. Just once focus on the positive and not the negative.

Or else, LDB is secure in his faith and rational in his estimate of politics. I do not see LDB as a hater. To you, Makita and some others, hate just means someone does not agree with your view. Perhaps, some of us do not agree with irrational claims. The homosexual lifestyle is an abomination to the Lord, God. Why should it be made equal to the natural order of things. If God had meant for two men to be together or two women to be together, the parts would fit. The parts do NOT fit.

Absolutely.

There's much more to be said about this issue, though I'll (mostly) refrain from saying it - for the reason Wonder cites. But also because, the California decision is going to be challenged, and no "final" decision will come of this for quite some time.

At the same time, though, as Sullivan noted today:

As usual, the lazy critics are uninformed. The California court has not over-ruled the legislature: in fact, the legislature has voted for full marriage equality [i]twice already
. And the court has not "created" a right to marriage for gay couples. It has argued that if the state has conceded that domestic partners should have, under state law, all the benefits and responsibilities of married couples, the designation of a separate and distinct category must be suspect, under strict scrutiny, to the inference that the designation is based on a desire to deny gay couples equal dignity and recognition. This is the same point I've made in the past; isn't constructing a separate and distinct category an example of pure animus? You have conceded the substance, but cannot concede the name. Since no heterosexual couple's rights would be affected in any way, what exactly is the rationale for maintaining the distinction? Except bias?

And we've pretty much conceded that yes - bias is indeed the reason we want the anti-gay initiatives, like Brubaker. Keep the gays down.

Bottom line, the Calif. Supreme Court did the right thing; a thing that, like interracial marrage, will one day be seen as obvious.

Wonder,

The Bible says it is God that judges, not us. Who are you to say what is natural. God made these people, God makes no mistakes, it is you that are making a mistake by judging them. What do you consider the natural order of things. What you consider natural? The problem you people have is not the gays, it's with $ex in general. This is your problem. You are using the gay people to verify your own $exual problems.

Gil,

Don't sugar coat it.

Well, then I guess it's a good thing that there are other religions with other gods to whom homosexuality isn't an abomination.

Have you ever been to one of their drive-in movie-type nights? I'm curious because I read about them on here in an article and they sounded like fun. I'd love to take the kids to a real drive-in movie, but the only place I've heard of is out by allentown.

People of different races and colors are born that way. Homosexuality is a chosen behavior. It is not the same at all. Sometimes the truth is worth repeating in spite of the horse being dead. The garden salad with grilled chicken at Burger King is within the calorie range I prefer for lunch. Then I pour on the salad dressing which does not help. I do not like diet salad dressing. How about at the bank? We did and Eph Nat'l. We even had a guy right out of high school bring all his accounts to us b/c of the dum dums, the teller down at Farmers snapped at him when he asked for one, "We don't do that here". Just because I don't like you doesn't mean I can't stand gays. You have no clue what I think but then again you don't care to get to know what I really think; you'd rather believe the worst of people in order to perpetuate your "poor me" attitude.

Beth,

I mean no disrespect in any way and I know that deep down you know that. I have read too many of Hope's posts on the gay threads to know better than what you say. She is not denying my rights? She doesn't have a sick taste in her mouth over gays? YOU-have a big heart-not her. For someone to constantly feel the need to come here and demoralize another human being doesn't display a big heart. Your actions speak for themselves. Wonder had the same thing going but opened up her mind and actually listened. She showed respect and courtesy that Hope has never shown. Wonder doesn't agree with homosexuality and I'm okay with that. I'm not asking people to accept it. There is not enough tolerance left in this world. If everyone would just treat others as they would want to be treated and have tolerance of others different than them this world would be a much better place, wouldn't you agree???

Often times people fear what they don't understand. Hopefully with all the postings the gay community has done they will realize that we have more in common then we have differences. The gay community has done a great job of educating the public on here. You can't change everyone but maybe for a few you have opened their eyes that they have nothing to worry about and can learn to accept you as you are. For the ones that are most intolerant, they are someone I have no desire to meet or have in my life.

As I said before, you and Tugrad try to read between the lines rather than believing what I actually write. Just because I don't want to be gay and I believe what my church teaches, does not mean that I "have a bad taste in my mouth over gays."

I believe hope and I both feel about the same on certain things. One is the teachings of the church about the sinful nature of the homosexual lifestyle. I, also, do not get the feeling that hope is intolerant to anyone. She merely speaks from her reality. I believe I can relate with anyone so long as we do not discuss sexuality. I really do not discuss that particular issue with my friends. It never comes up as a topic.

It never comes up in my conversations either. TB is the only place I know of that it comes up.

Seldom in a conversation with a heterosexual does sexuality does not come up within 5 minutes. During that time a heterosexual will talk at least once about husband/wife boyfriend/girlfriend. One way I know I am in conversation with a gay person is they will not talk about the same

And why should it? It's an uncomfortable subject to talk about, in any context including heterosexual relationships. When I get together with my best friend, we don't sit down and talk about our sexual relationships. It just isn't discussed, nor should it be as it is a private matter.

As I have written before in another post, I believe homosexuality is a sin; however, sin is sin, and therefore, all sins being equal, it is not for me to declare another person evil as that is between them and God as my own sins are between me and God.

Romans 5:8-11 says the following (NLT):

"But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. And since we have been made right in God’s sight by the blood of Christ, he will certainly save us from God’s condemnation. For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son. So now we can rejoice in our wonderful new relationship with God because our Lord Jesus Christ has made us friends of God."

I, in myself, am not righteous, nor will I ever make a claim to be. In the end, it is not what I know, it is Who I know. It is not what I do, it is what has been done for me and for anyone else who has a willingness to leave themselves behind and follow Christ.

Are there some people out there who are jerks who just want to hammer people over the head with the things that are wrong with them? Yep...there sure are...tons of them. Is everyone who claims to follow Christ among that number? Not on your life.

Again, as I mentioned before, I get so sick and tired of people accusing someone of hatred or being a jerk, just because they disagree with them.
