Illegal immigrant? Bend over

War on drugs? I’m sorry, make that a war on foreigners, waged with drugs…
The U.S. government has injected hundreds of foreigners it has deported with dangerous psychotropic drugs against their will to keep them sedated during the trip back to their home country, according to medical records, internal documents and interviews with people who have been drugged.
The government’s forced use of antipsychotic drugs, in people who have no history of mental illness, includes dozens of cases in which the “pre-flight cocktail,” as a document calls it, had such a potent effect that federal guards needed a wheelchair to move the slumped deportee onto an airplane.
It’s one thing if the deportees were so unruly that the only legitimate way to restrain them was with drugs. But don’t you get it? This is the Bush era - no legitimacy needed, nor attained:
Federal officials have seldom acknowledged publicly that they sedate people for deportation. The few times officials have spoken of the practice, they have understated it, portraying sedation as rare and “an act of last resort.” Neither is true, records and interviews indicate.
Records show that the government has routinely ignored its own rules, which allow deportees to be sedated only if they have a mental illness requiring the drugs, or if they are so aggressive that they imperil themselves or people around them.
The government ignored its own rules - there’s an epitath for this sad era if there ever was one.

More than 250? That's probably not very many. Also, I'm sure we don't have 'medical records' on most of these folks to make a determination one way or the other. They are illegal immigrants after all.
I'm sure that some authority-types have gone over the line, but with the numbers we are talking about, it may some ado about nothing.

dragonrider 5/14/08 2:02 PM | So we hear again from the right that its only hundreds and not official policy. I am sure the same with torture this will be found to be not a bottom up problem but a problem that started from the top as policy. |
grieker 5/14/08 2:55 PM | Have you a source for this? |

That the use of torture was decided from the top down that has been all over the news. Use of torture was decided in a meeting that included all the top admin officials and approved by admin lawyers. That most likely lower level people just don';t decide to inject people with drugs just my opinion |

Who cares?
Patriotic Americans.
People who believe in the rule of law
People who love the constitution
People who love America
People of conscience
People who have children
Christians
People of good will
etc etc
A better question would be, what kind of person doesn't care?

dragonrider 5/15/08 1:15 AM | Who cares, Abraham Lincoln for one the founder of the republican party. |
