Hillary as VP?

May 14th, 2008 4:54 pm · 5 comments

Hm. Via Dave Pigeon, we see that Gov. Ed Rendell, himself touted as a strong choice for VP if/when Obama secures the nomination, says he knows of a better choice:

“If Senator Obama becomes our nominee and he wants someone to carry the Clinton banner there’s no question in my mind he should ask Hillary Clinton,” Rendell told CNN’s Kyra Phillips.

Couple this with Hillary’s assertion that it would be a “terrible mistake” for any of her supporters to vote for John McCain over Barack Obama should Obama be the Democratic nominee - along with this line:

“I’m going to work my heart out for whoever our nominee is.”

…and you’ve got to wonder: Is she positioning herself/being positioned for the VP slot?

I still say it would be a very strong ticket (though I’m coming to believe that any ticket the Democrats run against the Republicans this year is going to do well). Cover almost all the bases; Hillary’s perceived strengh/experience in terms of foreign policy, her resonance with the working-class demographic while Obama resonates with younger, more diverse voters. Hard to beat. But can the Clintons accept second place?

Correct me if I'm wrong but Hillary is only nine delegates behind Obama. This race isn't over yet. I can see that others are trying to portray it that way but you are sadly mistaken.

I agree with Dick Morris:

No Veep Slot for Hillary

It would be an act of terminal insanity for Barack Obama to name Hillary Clinton as his vice presidential candidate. It would not help him get elected, it would drag all the Clinton controversies into the general election, and having her down the hall in the West Wing would be a recipe for disaster, dissension and civil war.

Hillary would add no votes to Obama, she would dog his campaign with scandal, she would be disloyal in office, and her husband would be, at best, a huge distraction. Case closed.

According to the Associated Press delegate tracker, Clinton is behind Obama by 181 total delegates (pledged and super). As Tim
Russert said this week, if Clinton wins two-thirds of all remaining pledged delegates (highly unlikely), she would still need 80 percent of the remaining superdelegates just to catch Obama. Such math is why pundits are declaring the race over and Obama the "presumptive" nominee.

I like Daisy Lee Myer's idea of Michael Bloomberg. A Repun or independent running mate would be pretty cool but I know that's pie in the sky. Maybe someday

I tend to agree, but my wish would be that Obama reaches out to Chuck Hagel and hope he accepts.
