‘Half-breed’

May 13th, 2008 2:51 pm · 21 comments

Depressing. Via Sullivan, Obama volunteers recount some of their rather sad experiences:

“The first person I encountered was like, ‘I’ll never vote for a black person,’ ” recalled Ross, who is white and just turned 20. “People just weren’t receptive.”

***

Karen Seifert, a volunteer from New York, was outside of the largest polling location in Lackawanna County, Pa., on primary day when she was pressed by a Clinton volunteer to explain her backing of Obama. “I trust him,” Seifert replied. According to Seifert, the woman pointed to Obama’s face on Seifert’s T-shirt and said: “He’s a half-breed and he’s a Muslim. How can you trust that?”

If it weren’t so depressing I’d be getting a kick out of how people who could never vote for a black person think it so important to wear the flag lapel pin. As if their own racism isn’t somehow a betrayal of what are supposed to be core American principles.

Can we please send this attitude back to Birmingham, 1960 - where it belongs?

Why disparage Birmingham when this attitude fits Lancaster so well.

Post your thoughts and comments about this blog post.

The only comment I have is about the term half-breed. I laughed when I read it because it reminded me of a guy I dated in high school. Half-breed was the term(of endearment) he used to describe his half brother and half sister.

Oh, and by the way, Obama isn't Muslim.

This is as sad statement where ever it happened or whoever said it.......but why do we assume the Clinton volunteer was from PA (Lackawanna Co.)? Maybe they were from NY, just like the Obama volunteer. There is such a stereotype of PA people, especially from elitist snobs from NYC, it wouldn't surprise me if this person made the whole story up. I have met as many ignorant, bigoted people in NYC and Philadelpia than I have in the middle of PA, so lets not judge others so quickly. That's a form of bigotry as well.

You make a very valid point. It's hard to lose that stigma.........

I'm not about to defend idiots anywhere, especially West Virginia.

I'll let their two fine Democrat senators do that. laugh.gif

BTW, you know that's music to the ears of the Clintons - longstanding Democrat party icons.

There is an adorable, well-behaved and respectful little girl on our block and I've heard a few of my neighbors use that term to describe her more than once. They only made the mistake of saying it to ME once though.

Nevermind the fact that overturning & unenforcement of mining safety regulations by the MSHA contributed to mining deaths in WV, UT & PA.

If you've ever been to Hawaii you'll see the most beautiful women in the world (I don't care about the dudes) - a blending of Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Caucasion, Black, Filipino and everything else under the sun.

I have a problem with people who use the term half-breed, especially when they're inbred, probably with less teeth in their mouth than the age of that little girl.

You are a funny guy today Pericles! With one neighbor, when she said it to me and I told her how cruel that is, she TRULY did not know it was not an acceptable term. She didn't use it disparingly like others so I gave her the benefit of the doubt and she learned from what I told her (that half breed is a term for DOGS only) and I am sure will never use the term again. Others however, were only filled with hate because, like I mentioned, she is a sweet little girl. Not like she was a brat punk who was disrespectful to the adults and they called her half-breed to knock her down. No, they used the term on a nice child, it makes no sense. Anyhow, I stand by your post, idiots will use unkind terms and show their character - EVERY TIME.

Half breed was a term most often used when referring to native american/any other persuasion mixtures. Whoever mentioned the Sonny and Cher reference got it right.

What is interesting is that at the Indian Hospital in Phoenix, if you are full indian, care is paid for. If you are half indian/half white, full care is paid for. If you are half indian/half mexican, care is only half paid for. And most indigenous mexicans are only 'mexican' because the border crossed them. Prior to that, they were indigenous peoples of the Americas. The only match that was found for my injun buddy who had leukemia was a mexican american guy living in California. Now he's walking around with two different sets of DNA -- but he's still eligible for full care at the Indian Hospital smile.gif

Hate Lancaster no, but I have lived here long enough to know that its unfair to slam another city and state when we have plenty of bigotry and racism right here. I get tired of Northerners looking down their noses at Southerners characterizing them as more racist all the while harboring racist and bigoted attitudes themselves. I guess I am saying remove the 2x4 from the eye of lancaster before denigrating another city.
