Pining for Reagan

April 25th, 2008 · No Comments

In the midst of a piece that sets my teeth on edge because she gets into the “Why doesn’t Obama wear the pin?” business - more on that when I have time to think and write, which won’t be today - Peggy Noonan actually gets around to something that I think is relevant - as […]

Barefoot, pregnant and reading Ralph Reed’s book

April 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Did you know Ralph Reed wrote a book?
For Reed, former head of the Christian Coalition, politics is a man’s world to its very core—especially when it comes to the race for president, which is at the center of this first novel. Women characters are either wives with drinking problems, tarts who use sex to get […]

Let them eat lapel pins

April 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Uh, should we be worried that this appeared not on some hysterical blog somewhere but, you know, in the Wall Street Journal?

I don’t want to alarm anybody, but maybe it’s time for Americans to start stockpiling food.
No, this is not a drill.
You’ve seen the TV footage of food riots in parts of the developing world. […]

Too perfect

April 24th, 2008 · No Comments

So Teh Leader does a cameo on “Deal or No Deal” Monday, quipping: “I’m thrilled to be anywhere with high ratings these days.”
Cue the New York Post:
This was one deal NBC could have refused.
President Bush’s videotaped cameo on Monday’s “Deal or No Deal” didn’t spur much interest - tying the show’s worst-ever Monday-night performance.
Monday’s show averaged 10 […]

Sex, from the party of ideas

April 24th, 2008 · No Comments

We do know the GOP likes to claim it’s the “party of ideas.” Too bad they wage war on actual thought.

Questions, questions

April 24th, 2008 · No Comments

A reader chimes in with some questions about how it is Lancaster County Dems went for Obama Tuesday night:
1. Are Democrats here more pacifist than Democrats in the rest of the state, and are Obama’s higher numbers partly attributable to a search for the closest thing to an anti-war candidate that this race has to […]

The devil you know

April 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Sullivan posts this note about why people vote Hillary, and I think it’s right on the money:
What they know about Clinton is that she was a part of the Administration that spent eight years talking about issues that were important to them and presiding over an era of peace and prosperity. So what they are […]

Good luck with that

April 24th, 2008 · No Comments

This one’s pretty funny, or would be if Dumeyer wasn’t serious:
Republicans are busy plotting strategies to recapture the thousands of voters who switched their party registration so they could vote in the Democratic primary.
Area Republican officials plan to convene next week to decide what their message should be, according to Lancaster County GOP chairman Dave […]

Good for McCain, maybe

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

So the Republican Party in North Carolina is running this ad:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXxkctYRAZQ

And of all people, John McCain is asking that they pull it:
From the beginning of this election, I have been committed to running a respectful campaign based upon an honest debate about the great issues confronting America today. I expect all state parties to do […]

Class act

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Thomas Frank in the WSJ, who deserves to be quoted at length:

It is by this familiar maneuver that the people who have designed and supported the policies that have brought the class divide back to America – the people who have actually, really transformed our society from an egalitarian into an elitist one – perfume […]

MySpace as the future of politcs

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Hm. NY Times takes a look at the “Milennial Makeover,” a book which theorizes that the future of American politics is being crafted by the Facebook pages of today:
Why are Millennials [those born since 1982] inclined to vote Democratic? Thanks to “their protected, structured and positively reinforced upbringing” (lots of quality time with their parents, […]

Our Obama trend

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

So with all the votes counted, Obama garnered more votes than Hillary here in Lancaster County, 27,126 to 22,710 - 54 percent to 46 percent.
That just amazes me.
Lancaster County Democratic registrations soared this year, with more than 12,000 new voters registered since last November. The local party was hoping for 10,000 by this November; they’re way […]

Divided they stand

April 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

So Hillary picks up at least 80 delegates, Obama at least 66. Obama still enjoys a healthy lead - but neither candidate now is expected to get the 2,025 delegates needed to win this thing by the end of the primary season in June.
As noted last night, I do think Obama represents the future of […]

Hillary’s argument

April 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Hillary by 10, John King on CNN right now noting how she crushed Obama in the typical white, working class enclaves - Scranton, Reading, etc.
Funny that Lancaster would be among the more urbanized counties going for Obama. In any event; snap judgment here is that Hillary’s got a good argument now that your typical blue […]

Smucker in a rout

April 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Don’t see anyone else reporting this here on LOL, so let me do the honors:
With 32 percent of districts reporting, Smucker is crushing the competition, with 2627 to Paul Thibault’s 1292; Steve McDonald with 1071. All subject to change - but I’m not sure anyone expected Smucker by this much, if it holds.
Update: Now with […]

Hillary, but so far not by much

April 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

Terry McAuliffe on my teevee right now celebrating Hillary’s win -CNN calling it for her tho at this point it’s only 53-47 Hillary - and Terry talks about “all the negative advertising” the Obama campaign engaged in during the Pennsylvania campaign.
Give me a break.
More - Blitzer asks Terry, what if she only wins by a […]

Still more Cheney’s World

April 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

So Lincoln Chaffee has a new book out. NPR’s got an excerpt, in which Chaffee talks about sitting down with Dick Cheney right after Bush wins the presidency “by a single vote in the Electoral College and a single vote in the Supreme Court.” Bush, of course, promised to be a uniter, not a divider.
Cheney […]
