This one’s pretty funny, or would be if Dumeyer wasn’t serious:
Republicans are busy plotting strategies to recapture the thousands of voters who switched their party registration so they could vote in the Democratic primary.
Area Republican officials plan to convene next week to decide what their message should be, according to Lancaster County GOP chairman Dave Dumeyer.
GOP overtures likely will paint Democrats as intent on raising taxes to pay for health care, subprime mortgage bailouts and alternative energy development, according to Dumeyer.
“Now is not the time to raise taxes,” he said. “Most economists would tell you in times of a recession is not the time to raise taxes.”
This is it? This is the hook?
I have little doubt some Republicans will switch back - because I’m betting a decent number are Limbaugh-ites who switched specifically to vote for Hillary - a gambit which, at least in Lancaster County, failed.
Cue Nelson:
But in any event, has it not occurred to the fine GOP folks that the reason Republicans switched might have been that they believe something is going to have to be done about health care, the subprime mortgage mess and alternative energy development?
And that, in order to meet these challenges, sure, taxes might have to rise - but that these folks are willing to pay higher taxes, at least to some degree, in order to achieve these goals? Is it really going to be part of the official GOP strategy that the party is not going to do anything about these issues?
Good luck with that.
But the funniest part is where state GOP spokesman Michael Barley says this:
“If you look at what the Democrats want to do to address these situations, it’s higher taxes and a retreat from the war on terror,” he said. “Americans are going to think it’s a bad strategy, and on the economy, they’re completely off.”
Not quite sure if Barley just hasn’t been paying attention or what, but this idea that we’re going to lure voters by telling them that we need more of the steady Republican hand that got us here isn’t merely faniciful - it’s delusionary.
