Whatever they’re against, we’re for

Sullivan on right-wing columnist Hugh Hewitt’s free-association conservatism:
It would be helpful if Hewitt were to provide a guide to what he thinks “right” and “left” now are. Hewitt has supported a party that has added $32 trillion to our future unfunded debt in seven years. Is that right or left? Hewitt supports an open-ended project of nation-building in the middle of the Arab Muslim world, after five years of occupation. Is that now right or left?
Well, both are “right,” obviously; for the definition of “right” or “conservative” these days can be summed up in two sentences:
Whatever liberals (or libertarians, or paleocoservatives) don’t like, that’s what “conservatives” are for.
No matter how liberal it actually is.

Thereby it is easy to define a newspaper liberal if they disagree with any conservative doctrine. Or a person left wing if that person does not agree with a conservative doctrine. Anything to the left of right wing is far left wing. |

dragonrider 4/9/08 5:42 PM | I have always been for it except when I was against it and will always be for it until such time as I am against it. |
