The beatdown will be televised

April 9th, 2008 11:31 am · 11 comments

I’d read about this attack on a 16-year-old girl in Florida, and as the sheriff’s department down there released portions of the video, wouldn’t you know it winds up on YouTube.

Link, but not posted here, too graphic. As a parent, I’d have a hard time watching a video of kids doing this to my own, and not immediately marching over to settle scores.

But, are we raising a stupider crop of kids today that these assaults often wind up being filmed, which of course then incriminates the suspects?

Lindsay’s father, Patrick, said the teens’ motivation for the attack was to produce a video that would become popular on YouTube, a video-sharing Web site.

Ha ha, let’s commit a felony, film it and see how many hits it gets on YouTube!

This is the where the American Idol society intersects with teen angst/misbehavior. Kids are always prone to horrible judgment, but the idea that we’ll capture the results on camera with the idea of going viral - and maybe getting famous! - really is something new, and dubious, under the sun.

I got most of what was broadcast on this on my local news here in Florida, but

still too many grey areas to judge what their real motive was.

Ongoing trash talking on "youtube" was what brought it to fisticuffs.

It could very well be that they wanted to show what happens to those who talk too much trash . Eight of them gang up on you and beat you senseless !!

I hope that when the law is through with them and they end up in prison, the population gangs up on them and beats them senseless....it's only fair !! firedevil.gif

We at some point went from "boys will be boys" to "don't stifle their creativity" to OMG what has happened to our kids. We have stood back and watched each generation become more tolerant of bad behavior, more apathetic to violence, more afraid to speak up for what is right. We have taught kids that we all DESERVE our 15 minutes of fame, no matter how we decide to get it; that the world owes us respect (no matter how we spit on the rest of the world).

We have made authority the enemy, whether that be parents who are afraid to correct their child for fear of abuse claims, teachers and administrators who are unable to correct a child for fear of a lawsuit; and police who have to worry if the thug they are trying to stop has more firepower than they do.

We have created this society; however, what we have completely lost is a sense of COMMUNITY. It is now the me generation, me versus them, them being out to get me. We need to go back about 60 years, figure out when we climbed into the handbasket, and make damn sure we take a different path this time around.

Well spoken buddy but you know that'll take a bunch of years to straighten out.

Right on, Scout! I watched an attorney "defend" this gang of idiots last night on a news show. Her feeling is that "oh, well...they should only be charged with a misdemeanor for a "prank" like this.......Huh?????

Sounds corny as it can be, but give me Ward Cleaver parenting any day of the week!

Good post, Scout. I am sure, as a scout leader and parent, you see all kinds of things that make you go blink.gif . I guess what frightens me the most is when we see a shift from not caring behavior is wrong to supposedly not even knowing.

Actually, my only children are the 4 legged furry kind LOL; however, I have lots of nieces and nephews in my family of choice. The horrifying part is that even at age 40 I can see the decline in the 20 years I have been out of school. I must have been raised very differently than some of my generation; because it is the children of my generation that are thugs and obliviots of which I speak.

Ooops, sorry for the mistake. I am 43--a very new 43...--anyway, I am with you on the decline. My husband taught 4th grade for 9 years and changed to another profession about 12 years ago. Even in that time, he was shocked at how things had changed with what kids were allowed to do and parents' attitudes toward schoolwork and so on. As you can imagine, the people who began teaching years ago and are now preparing for retirement are dealing with very different issues then when they began their careers.

There are still some of us who haven't caved in totally when raising our kids, but it can be tough.

I saw a portion of this beating on tv last nite and it was sicking to watch, what was even more sicking was watching one of mothers defend her daughter implying that the victim deserved this beat down because of something she posted on myspace!
