Leaving on a jet plane…

… or maybe a fighter jet?:

Tens of thousands of airline passengers will soon be flying on jets outfitted with anti-missile systems as part of a new government test aimed at thwarting terrorists armed with shoulder-fired projectiles.

Three American Airlines Boeing 767-200s that fly daily round-trip routes between New York and California will receive the anti-missile laser jammers this spring, according to the Department of Homeland Security, which is spending $29 million on the tests.

Jets will fly with the jammer device mounted on the belly of the plane, between the wheels. The device works with sensors, also mounted on the plane, that detect a heat-seeking missile and shoot a laser at it to send the missile veering harmlessly off course.

Well, I’m thinking a missle veering off-course wouldn’t be so “harmless” were it to crash in a residential area.

But are we really now going to start equipping civilian aircraft with military capabilities? Wing-mounted machine guns for puddle jumpers? Might encounter a terrorist, you know. In our One Nation, Under Fear, it makes perfect sense to spend millions of taxpayeer dollars on this. In the real world, it’s nuts.

What was even nuttier was arming Afghan freedom fighters with RPGs and then trying to buy them back, after they learned how to use them.

The scene from Syriana where George Clooney's characters sells them 2 units, set to detonate in 5 mins., comes to mind.

El Al has a far more sophisticated missile defense system on ALL of its planes.
This has been reported numerous places in the mainstream media.

Since the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq, most Arabs have nearly as much reason to hate the U.S. as they do Israel. The U.S. needs to start taking lessons from Israel RIGHT NOW, before it is too late.

Example: El Al has had bullet-proof securely-locked cockpit doors since the late 1960s. U.S. airlines rejected them as being far too expensive. Had the U.S. followed El Al's lead, the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 would never have happened in the form they did - and the WTC would most likely still be standing.

If air travel was truly free market instead of subsidized by the Feds there would be a lot fewer carriers and higher profit margins but that would have gone to "shareholder value" .
Also the EL AL has a different approach to dealing with the hijackers. US crews were trained to mollify the hijackers and safely land the planes. They had no idea the 911 hijackers were on a suicide mission.
