And so we see another young male going out in a blaze of glory, taking eight others with him.
It’s always young men. It’s always those nursing a grievance against society - Fate/God has been cruel to me, now I will have my revenge upon faith/upon God. I shall inflict injustice upon the world, as it has been inflicted upon me. Then I shall kill myself before I might reap what I’ve sown.
I win.
That’s the attitude, as always. But it seems to me it’s fueled, in part, by the guaranteed notoriety - by the fact that the world will now know their name:
“He had said how much he loved his family and all his friends and how he was sorry he was a burden to everybody and his whole life he was a piece of (expletive) and now he’ll be famous.”
It seems to me that one way to derail this murderous train is to deny these killers that notoriety. Not that I’m in favor of restrictions of the press; but what if laws were passed to prohibit the publication of the names of those who did this?
I’m sure those names would come out anyway - you, the public, would be too curious, you’d ferret them out and post them on the Web and people would know, regardless. But if in fact those names were kept out of the major media outlets; if in fact the fame these people seek was denied them - would it help tamp down on these events?
