Together 4-evah, 4-evah we two…
Iraq’s government, seeking protection against foreign threats and internal coups, will offer the U.S. a long-term troop presence in Iraq in return for U.S. security guarantees as part of a strategic partnership, two Iraqi officials said Monday….
<snip>
The Americans appeared generally favorable subject to negotiations on the details, which include preferential treatment for American investments, according to the Iraqi officials involved in the discussions. …
<snip>
Preferential treatment for U.S. investors could provide a huge windfall if Iraq can achieve enough stability to exploit its vast oil resources. …
<snip>
When asked about the plan, U.S. Embassy spokeswoman Mirembe Nantongo noted that Iraqi officials had expressed a desire for a strategic partnership with the U.S. in a political declaration in August
The follow-up questoin to Nantongo might have been:
Did the Iraqis ever have any choice but to “express a desire for a strategic partnership?”

So you're saying is that we shouldn't have accepted "residency" in Japan, Korea, Guahm, Germany, Berlin, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Britan, Egypt for all these years? I wonder what the world would look like if we hadn't done that!
Put your right hand on your left ear and your left hand on your right ear and pull untill you see daylight things will be a lot clearer then Joe.

So, you are making a direct comparison to our involvement in WWII with that of Iraq? Do you honestly not see the difference?
Later...Shawn

i believe he was until reason got the better of him.
hands up bush war supporters...how many would be coo de laa with a deal whereby we protect the shites thereby thwarting democracy in exchange for oil and military bases?
|
usedmeat 11/27/07 11:59 AM | That's how we got there in the first place. We supported Saddm when he overthrew the ligitmate government in Iraq. We also did the same to Iran when we installed our puppet, Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. |

Where did you read that this deal includes our support for the Shites over democracy? I must have missed that...

lee41 11/27/07 1:42 PM | The Shiites are wary of the deals the US Military struck with Sunni insurgents. Basically, they are paying them not to fight. Their concern is that this support could be used enable a future Sunni uprising against the ruling Shiites.
It was not about the oil? Of course it was.
We were not looking to have permanent bases in Iraq? Of course we were.
But didn't Bush say if Iraqi's asked us to leave we would? He never intended to allow them to say that.
|
Milton 11/27/07 3:07 PM | Oil and bases have always been an component of national security, which, like the spread of democracy, has always been part of our Iraq mission. Moreover, keeping troups in Iraq is exactly what we did after nearly every foreign war. This is exactly what we didn't do in Vietnam and look at what happen...I think we should expect to have our forces there for some time to come, it will be essential to rebuilding Iraq. Moreover, although WMDs may have been sold as the primary reason for our invasion, I don't think that Bush ever said or ever had the notion that we would be able to pull our completely in only a short time... |

malarki is shite
any threat of a coup would come from the sunnis.
hence we would be protecting the shites from the sunnis.
the sunnis have no oil.
the shiites have the oil as do the kurds,
the shiites don't want to share the oil wealth with the sunnis.
do you think the sunnis are going to sit still for a deal like this?
if you do you have not been paying attention.
