Jolt to your wallet

On what is shaping up to be a singularly lousy day for a variety of reasons, the New Era plops onto my desk this afternoon and the lead story staring up at me:

Future shock: With big rate hike looming,  PPL unveils plan designed to help consumers ease the pain.

“Big rate hike” as in state-mandated caps are expiring - and over the course of the next five years, rates are going to go up 34 percent. This does not include a 5.1 rate hike pending Jan. 1.

Ah, but PPL, how magnanimous of them, is permitting its customers to phase in the rate hikes - 7 percent in July ‘08; 7 percent in Jan. ‘09; 6 percent in Jan. ‘10; 6 percent in Jan. ‘11; and 6 percent in Jan. ‘12.

Strikes me that with the 5.1 rate hike pending this January, even if you phase it in, you’re looking at 19.1 percent hike in little more than a year, by Jan. ‘09, anyway.

So upon seeing this, the first thing I remembered was that Pennsylvania has “electric choice.” Remember that? I Googled it, and guess what? A majority of the links for “shoppers” are broken on the state PUC page itself.

So much for choice.

And you’ll recall that when the push for deregulation happened back in the 1990s, we were all told that it would result in lower prices. Surprise surprise - last year the Christian Science Monitor found out that this never really happened.

Who could have guessed?

And PPL is doing quite well, thank you, even before the higher rates take effect. But you know how it goes. Or rather you’ll find out, starting in January.

Like I said before. Maybe it is time for 're-regulation' since two can play their game.

The Christian Science Monitor story raises the possibility. You will be utterly unsurprised to discover that the electric companies think this would not only be bad for them, but bad for you as well.

All of those that thought the cost was going to go down; raise your hand.

Okay, I count ZERO. Every time there is a price increase WHATEVER the item we complain. I was almost estatic when I got a rebate check from my insurance company. Sure is was only $17.80 but it was money back in my pocket. Then I remember, just like the refund from the IRS, it was my money to begin with. You aren't giving anything back except what was once mine.

Consider it a "warm up" if the Dems win the White House. Free College for all, Free 5gs when you are born, "free" healthcare for all. And don't forget Charlie " can not give a straight answer" Rangle's approach to taking care of the AMT.

And Bye-Bye tax cuts. Make sure you sell off your booming stocks that have been so good to you before the tax cuts go away!

And let all illegal immigrants drive with a legal licence - paid insurance too! And, their kids will go to college for free while you fork over 30gs per year at M'ville.

I'll raise my hand. It worked with telephones. It worked with cable television (in markets that allow it). It works in many industries every single day. Obviously something went very wrong with electric. My guess would be lobbyists or not well thought out legislation or both.

And what are you smoking? I certainly hope you don't actually believe all that hysteria that the extremists are trying to force-feed you.

Remember, no matter what is promised, at least some of the Republicans in Congress will have to vote to approve it.

You are aware of NY Gov Elliot Spitzer's plan to give illegals driver's licenses, right? And Hillary's no position stance on it? where have you been the last few days?

And no doubt, you are aware of Hillary's promise all babies getting 5000.00 USA dollars, right?

And then the dem's "I'll top that" promises of free college and 401(k) funding?

Did not not to light up for that - it's all over the news including NBC, ABC,CNN,and CBS - who are turning against Hillary.

...The Fed started cutting the Fed Funds rate in 2001, lowering it near 0% by the end of 2001. Standard economic analysis gives interest rate cuts a lag time of 12-18 months. That means these cuts had their maximum impact in the Spring of 2003 when the economy started to really take-off. But finally, let's look at the "explosion in tax revenue" the Republicans claim their tax cuts generate. Here is a chart from the St. Louis Federal Reserve which shows the year-over-year percent change in tax receipts. Notice that in the 1980s and 2000s there is no meaningful difference in the percentage change in tax receipts when compared to non – supply – side policy years. In other words, supply-side tax cuts don't provide a meaningful difference in tax receipts when compared to non-supply side years. ...

My point is YOU, Meat will be keeping less and less of your cash. Maybe that is ok with you and you feel that it is ok to send your $ to others becuase of politics.

The other point I made was Hillary could not articulate where she stood on Spitzers policy, which the Citizens of lib NY are against. Made her look weak and couild not handle the questions. For once, No softballs for her.

Bt the way another Hillary mistep regarding the White Papers while she was First Lady:

Bill says Russerts question was "Breathtakingly" Misleading.

Those price reductions were usually because of technological breakthroughs. I don't think PPL has changed the way they produce power.

Initially, when phones, cable came out, pricing was out of reach of average people and then breakthroughs brought down production costs etc.

Years ago the same may have happened with the production of electricity.

You don't think if AT&T and MaBell could have held on to the monopoly that we would be paying 2x to 10x more for phone service today? Cell phones could have influenced that, but having a choice for business phone service and long distance service has greatly influenced pricing. The technology is still going crazy, the phone companies still needed to invest in infrastructure and equipment. Fiber to the house is the current craze. Verizon is selling it dirt cheap in parts of the country just to knock out Comcast and other competition.

Cable is another great one to look at. Go to Florida and other major metro area where they have a choice between 2 or 3 cable companies and compare their rates to ours. Same technology investments, different pricing structures. All because of competition.

Major metro areas have a sizable population which can sustain a competitive cable tv market.

WRT electric deregulation, the competition will probably shift to the appliances and the energy they consume.
Compact flourescent bulbs, laptops over desktop PCs, HE washing machines.

We're dealing with rising energy costs on a global scale. Look to companies that can provide/supplement energy generation by wind, solar, etc.

I agree about the cable/metro area. However, you must also remember that each municipality has a nice little contract with the local cable provider. Does the muni get some cash from those deals?

Isn't the biggest reason one cable company has been able to dominate the market been that they've built their business eating up regional companies who pretty much had a monopoly to begin with?

The only alterative is proving to be the big box volume discount approach; bundle TV/phone/internet.

Wait a minute...if the dems are going to give "Free college for all", there will be no need to fork 30gs over to M'Ville.

If you read the NEWS and not the smear campaign, you would know by now that was abandoned nearly as quickly as it was proposed. Unlike GW Bush, Hillary Clinton is able to learn from her mistakes.

The fact that she even said it demonstates the idiocy of her world. If no one said anything about, it would be on the table and not abandonded due to the shock of public outcry.

No smear, dude, just what she says. oh yeah, that's Piling on because she is a woman. Keep making excuses for her.

Just like the no answer on the Spitzer plan for illegals to get driver's licenses in The empire state - no position, flip flops and confusion. Obama and Edwards are having a field day. One (of many) more issue - the papers re: her time as first lady that will not be released to the public.

Aren't you all for public disclosure,Artie?
