On the wire

Warwick story makes the Associated Press, meaning it will be carried in newspapers around the state today - and around the nation, probably to a lesser extent.
The story mentions the Jena 6 incident, as have some of the local pieces. Cops in Lititz say there’s no connection, though I suspect there is (that’s the subject for this week’s print edition). I do think it odd, though, that here you have a generation that is supposed to be distanced from the racist attitudes of the past; it’s sort of a trite word, but you like to think these kids, this generation, is a lot more enlightened than previous generations.
And then you get Warwick; then you get Jena, La. And you say, well, that’s an aberration, and surely it is; but I think society is maybe fooling itself about its kids racial “enlightenment,” or that there are other factors at work. Tribalism, so prevalent in our politics, our culture and our media; that’s part of it, I think.

P.S.: I do NOT consider Karl Rove to be a genuine Republican. The vast majority of Republicans are honest and hard-working people. So please don't accuse me of Republican bashing; all I'm bashing is Karl Rove, and the divisiveness that has become his legacy. |
hahaha 10/12/07 5:53 AM | That is one lame suggestion. Has school violence really increased or just the media coverage of it? Has school violence only increased in the United States? Are there other possible factors or multiple factors that could have contributed to the increase? Internet? Movies? Video Games? You know those kids are just so tuned in to every word Rove has to say...... |

"Tribalism, so prevalent in our politics, our culture and our media; that’s part of it, I think." GS
See my signature. The one about race. Segregation is the natural ordering of animal species. When you push a plumb-bob off center in one direction, what is the inevitable result? It swings back the exact opposite direction. By instituting a supposed evil, you risk creating a camp for those disillusioned by the observable failure of your "enlightened" way. I'm old enough to be a grandfather, they are young and idealistic.
In this PC era, they know exactly what is taboo.

Whirlwind 10/12/07 11:50 AM | Parents choosing segregated schools
By Julie Henry, Education Correspondent
Primary schools are becoming increasingly segregated because parents want their children to be educated with their own ethnic groups, new research has shown.
The study shows that the over-concentration of some ethnic groups in state schools cannot be explained by the social make-up of catchment areas alone. Instead, parents are actively choosing to segregate their children from other groups of pupils, sending them to predominately "black" or "Asian" schools.
Researchers from Bristol University who analysed more than 300 primaries in Birmingham found that from the age of four, children in some schools are being taught in near isolation from pupils of different racial backgrounds.
The study, which will be presented to a major conference on school segregation in London this week, supports the warning by Trevor Phillips in 2005 that the country is "sleepwalking to segregation". According to Mr Phillips, who was then chairman of the Commission for Racial Equality, the creation of "fully-fledged ghettos" in the UK is leading to "chronic cultural conflict".
