“Don’t taze me, bro”

September 19th, 2007 3:24 pm · 11 comments

By now you’ve probably seen the video of the University of Florida student who was tasered after asking John Kerry some questions at an event. In one respect I’m sort of torn on this; Andrew Meyer, the student, was obviously grandstanding. “He’s an idiot,” comes one stray comment from the crowd as the cops are holding him down; and he was being obnoxious.

But.

There was no reason, no reason at all, for the campus cops to taser him - unless they specifically wanted to punish him for being uppity. And it’s obvious that’s just what they were doing; he’s got five cops on top of him, they have him cuffed, he isn’t going anywhere - and they taser him anyway.

The Rude Pundit, in a surprisingly non-rude post, nails it:

Yes, he did jump to the front of the line to demand to ask Kerry a question, but Meyer was tasered because he wouldn’t knuckle under to the authority of the cops. He wasn’t a threat, he wasn’t violent, he was trying to comply (although you try doing anything rational when you’re on the ground with half a dozen cops on top of you, yelling at you and an auditorium of people yelling about, some laughing at, what’s being done to you), and he still got tasered.

Our country is so devoid of actual dissent and activism, so filled with citizens cowed by cops and security of all sorts treating us like criminals, that stepping out of line in the smallest way or slightly breaking decorum now seems to deserve a smackdown. Acquiescence is not only expected. It will be enforced. And so many of us are willing to participate in the enforcement, rolling our eyes and laughing at those who would dare misbehave.

I don't care how obnoxious the kid was. You can't watch that video and still believe the we live in a free country governed by the Constitution.

The scariest part, to me, was the room full of people, including John Kerry just sitting there watching this guy being literally tortured in front of them, while one young woman alone protests the cops' actions. I mean, wtf?

City, in other reports, Kerry actually says something along the lines of "it's okay, let me answer his question" at least twice. I'm not a Kerry fan, but I thought I should point this out to be fair. No, Kerry didn't run into the crowd to protect the guy, but he didn't seem to support the tasering or suppression of free speech either.

My opinion of Kerry shrank considerably after watching the video. I don't care what he said, in a barely audible tone of voice, or if he said it twice.

I would imagine that if a U.S. Senator, war hero and former candidate for President had strode purposefully down the aisle and in a calm but commanding tone ordered the cops to cease and desist at once, they may have respected his authority as a branch of Big Brother.

Which actually begs the question of why he didn't say something when the robo-cops started hustling the guy away from the microphone in the first place, like "HEY! Cop guys! He's obnoxious but he's asking ME a question! How about you let him go and move on back, OK?"

And then there's the albeit long-winded question the kid was working his way up to in the first place. Kerry (so much like Gore) conceded a very hinkey election without even putting up a fight, when there were (once again) very serious questions about the votes and the process.

I mean c'mon, this is starting to work like paint-by-numbers for crying in a bucket.

All this kid had to do was shut his pie hole and go with the campus cops. But no, he kept up the struggle until he got tazered.

Perhaps rather than using a tazer they should have Rodney Kinged him with their batons ala Chicago Police Riots?

The poor kid, if that is the p.c. term to call him, was not tasered for asking, or attempting to ask a question. His tasering was a direct result of fighting the police. Everyone seems so upset he was tasered, instead would all prefer he was beat with batons? How about maced? A couple good ole fashion punches????

Right or wrong, MANY people, Kerry, the cops, the kid, many others could have done things different to change the outcome; BUT NO ONE DID. Kerry didnt help, the kid continued sliding down a very slippery slope, and the police did what they are trained to do.

Now, obviously Mr. Smart has either not watched the entire video or is watching an entirely different video...as it is CLEAR that the young man was NEVER placed in handcuffs, due to his constant and continuous struggle. At no time was he under the control of the police and after repeated attempts to stop struggling, after seeing the taser, YANKS his hand out from the police yelling and cursing...after repeated requests/demands not to do so....

Sorry, he got what his actions were asking for. He could have stopped this from happening at many times.

Now the question of why was he asked to be quieted is a whole other can of worms! The tasering and the quieting of this young man, do not necessarily go hand in hand.

I thought they got at least one cuff on him.

One cuff is like, having one dice...you can still role it, might not be a pair...just gotta work twice as hard.

One cuff doesn't restrict your movement, much..if at all.

how can you people let this slide?
SERIOUSLY!!!
have you never seen even a single episode of cops?
they don't spend all of two minutes trying to get someone into handcuffs and then TASER them!!!
FFS!
he was asking kerry questions, and he should have stopped them.
oh, he asked politely, oh wow, twice, for them to stop?
oh, good on you john for being so bloody helpful.
you don't taser someone for being loud. and yes, i watched the whole thing, and frankly, it's extremely disturbing.

i suppose you would just sit back and trust the guvmint to deal fairly with this guy?
you wouldn't be asking why you were being arrested?
you wouldn't be asking for help when five cops try to put you in handcuffs without telling you why?

just keep on bleating, sheep. mad.gif

So when fighting, potentially for your life, how long do you fight before using any available tool at your disposal?

Please. This has now become yesterdays news as the kid has found to have no credability. His show-boating has got him his 5 minutes of fame, and about 20 seconds of pain.

Again, I still think he should have been able to ask his questions...even if he was ignorant!
why?

how were these cops fighting for their lives?
they could have let him have his say, and escorted him out.

or, oh wow, what a novel idea, they could have TOLD him what he was being arrested for!!

15 minutes of fame?

how many people will be "arrested" for asking questions?
since when is that against the law?
how long will people sit back, and by doing nothing, allow this wanton use of force become acceptable, and then standard?

Agreed, that in this case it would be a stretch (from the provided video) to say they were fighting for their lives. But they were fighting. And I know, I have always been taught, when fighting...you fight to win. A good fight is one that lets you continue with your day and go home to your family and children.

And second I agree with you, I am not sure he should have been interrupted or stopped from asking his question.

See we actually agree more then we both may wish to admit to!
