Libby walks

Never again do I want to hear a Republican invoke the “rule of law.”

Sullivan:

If this shores up his conservative base, then his conservative base has no principles. They impeached Clinton for the same crime. But they let their own go free. If you needed a reason to rid Washington of the president’s corrupt party, you just got one.

You may not want to hear it, but too bad gil. Everyone not blinded by republican hate knows this was a case of the criminalization of politics.

Fact.

Hey, Stew got something right for once. It is a case of criminalization of politics. Only it was the chief Republicans Bush and Cheney that authorized that criminalization.

I think the sentence could have been a little too harsh, however, I don't think he should have walked either.
I do think it's possible he was a scape goat, but this just looks bad. Let him sit for a year, then pardon him, he'd probably be out by then on good behavior anyway.

Like so many other things this admin. has done, it's yet another example of how they'll mannipulate the rule of law and the justice system to serve personal and political ends.
This give people the idea that there are two different standards of justice, one for people with powerful connections and another for the rest of us. It's not ethical to exempt the inner circle from the rule of law, even when they're within the federal guidelines, particularly when Bush and/or Cheney had a hand in their criminal
actions.

Nice to have friends in high places in their second and last term when they don't give a hoot what anyone thinks and no votes are at stake. I only hope the republican base remembers this at election time. Anyone think Martha should have gotten a pardon?

I don't think Clinton ever commuted a sentence, much less pardoned anyone. At least that was the impression I got after hearing his wife's comments on this matter.

Somebody is off in cloud koo-coo land. Joe Wilson apologize to Libby?

Valerie Wilson's career with the CIA was destroyed and her life put in danger.

Why?

Because Bush and dick Cheney were upset that Wilson had the nerve to call them out on their Niger uranium claims. Had they rebutted Wilson's claims without the Rovian attacks we wouldn't be having this discussion.

What did wilson tell the cia in debriefing? Then what did he tell the NYT? Then Richard Armitage confesses that he leaked the name. But guess what? Armitage isn't close enough to bush and cheney to get any political mileage. So, fitzgerald goes after libby even after knowing who really leaked, just so they can dig something up and justify the witchhunt. Then all they find is libby stumbling all over himself.

Bush hasn't made me happy lately with this immigration stuff, but he nailed this one. Not many presidents would have had the stones.

Justplainjoe, you keep bringing up, putting the hand on the Bible, swearing to tell the truth, and than lying.

There are many still many people in this nation would have a problem with doing that, and rightly so. I was in civil court just recently and the defendant lied through her teeth right after she swore on the Bible. The District Judge knew it too. Some years back I went with another individual in civil court concerning a traffic violation. The claimant lied in that case. I am convinced that we might as well swear on a Micky Mouse comic book as it would have the same amount of affect in encouraging people to tell the truth.

However, what else do you expect? After all, the Bible is just a myth and fairy tale, same as Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Isn't it?

it matters not one whit what i believe about the bible, the law is quite clear and scoots broke the law.

the issue isn't whether jr boy should pardon him, the issue is why christians aren't upset that scoots and jr used their holy bible for toilet paper.

if you can't stand up for the bible because of bums like jr and cheney and scootie you may as well pack it in, kid.

People have been standing up for the Bible for a long time, Justplainjoe, except they are always accused of breaching the separation of Church and State.

Funny, I never knew you to be so defensive of the Bible.

So Libby lied, what else is new? Yes we should be outraged, but isn't that what presidents and their people have done for the last 15 years?

Gee, bigstew, why don't you provide links to what Joe Wilson was alleged to have told the CIA?

But it dosen't make a whit of difference what Joe Wilson, Karl Rove, or Dick Armitage did or said because Libby's conviction was based on the false testimony he gave the grand jury concerning his role in the matter.

Had Scooter Libby told the truth Patrick Fitzgerald could have dropped the IIPA acusations, sought indictments for Libby, or granted him immunity and cast his net wider.

This is what you republicans can't or won't get. Scooter Libby lied to the grand jury. Plain and simple, nothing else matters. It doesn't matter what anybody else involved or alleged to be involved said or did. Scooter Libby lied about what and when he said to reporters.

Those reporters told a different story than Libby while under oath. I'm surprised that the republican noise machine hasn't accused the reporters of conspiring to bring Libby down by perjuring themselves because they hate the Bush administration.

Beep and moan all you want. Patrick Fitzgerald asked Scooter Libby,"What did you say and when did you say it about Valerie Wilson?" And Libby lied to his face.

Saw this on the web and thought it prescient:

Hmm. Let me get this straight. He respects the jury's verdict and then completely overturns it? Such double-speak is particularly problematic coming from a man who justified executing a mentally retarded man (with an IQ of 60) because he didn't want to "replace the verdict of a jury."

Stew:

The investigation did not end with Armitage because he was not the only person known to have leaked the classified information about Plame to reporters. Armitage, Fleicher, Rove and Libby - they all did it.

Armitage was one source for Novak. Rove was the second. Rove, Fleicher and Libby all talked to other reporters about Plame.

My belief is that Rove, Fleicher and Libby planned to leak the information about Plame to get the story out, not knowing Armitage had already spilled the beans to Novak. Had they known that, I doubt they would have talked to other reporters.

The only reason to leak Plame's identity was to try to discredit Wilson's story by saying his trip to Niger was a boondoggle set-up by his wife (which it was not). Why would Rove, Fleicher and Libby attempt to plant a false story about Wilson's trip? For something to do? Sounds like a political payback to me.

They also seemed to be fixated with the notion that Wilson said his trip was set-up by Cheney - which Wilson never said.

Of couse, who knew and who did not know Plame was covert? I doubt we will ever find out. Knowledge of this fact can be tied to the State Dept memo sent to the White House where information about Plame was clearly marked S/NF = secret not to be shared with foreign intelligence. It seems Rove successfully argued he did not know Plame was covert (or at least Fitzgerald believed there was not sufficient evidence to prove otherwise).

Question to all of the Republicans ONLY:

What would have happened if VP Al Gore's chief of staff Ron Klain had been convicted of perjury, and President Bill Clinton had commuted his prison sentence?

What would have happened if VP Al Gore had been accused of revealing the identity of an undercover agent?

Shouldn't GW Bush, Dick Cheney, and Scooter Libby be treated in exactly the same way?
