For those of you looking to get a head start on your winter spare tire, the Lehigh Wheelmen are here to help.
The Allentown-area cycling club will again hold its Donut Derby ride on Labor Day, Monday, Sept 7.
The annual ritual of bicycling and gluttony begins at 9 a.m. at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, otherwise known as the Lehigh Velodrome, near Trexlertown.
This event rewards both speed and consumption. Riders will pedal 12 miles to the first donut stop, consume as many Krispy Kremes as they are able, then ride another 12 miles to a second donut stop and repeat. Then, 12 miles back to the velodrome for a total of 36 miles. Medals will be given riders finishing in the least time. Three-minute deductions will made for each donut eaten - and held down. “Donut Adjusted Time” will determine winners. There will be age group winners and the chance to win the coveted “Spare Tire Championship Belt.”
Advance registration for the ride is $18, and $25 per tandem, if registered by Aug. 30. Online registration on BikeReg.com closes at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5. Same-day registration, at $25, will also be available.
