The Nashville Business Journal reported this week that Greensboro, S.C. and Davis, Calif. are the two cities of the short list for a new home for the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame.
That leaves Trexlertown out of the running.
Trexlertown, home of the Valley Preferred Cycling Center, formerly the Lehigh Valley Velodrome, had put in a bid to become home to the national cycling museum. A committee had proposed construction of a new Hall of Fame museum building adjacent to the velodrome. The $6.6 million building was to have included a museum gallery, exhibition hall, library, cafe and gift shop, the Allentown Morning Call newspaper had reported last summer.
The Hall of Fame was located in a storefront museum in Somerville, N.J., but redevelopment pressure in the town pushed the museum out. The cycling memorabilia is now packed away in a warehouse. The Hall of Fame board solicited proposals from cities nationwide for a new location.
Greensville, S.C., is also home of the U.S. national road championship race, which it took from Philadelphia. Davis, a university town south of Los Angeles, has been recognized as one of the most bicycling-friendly cities in the nation.
