Seeing the need for a local youth cycling organization, Mike Farrington, owner of the Green Mountain Cyclery bike shop, is stepping up to sponsor a club.
The Rockets presented by Green Mountain will serve youth ages 12 through 16. The club intends to teach road riding skills, basic racing skills, and basic bicycle maintenance. Youth would also benefit from exercise and the opportunity for camaraderie with other youth interested in cycling.
An Open House will be held at Green Mountain Cyclery, 285 S.Reading Road, Ephrata, on Saturday, March 7, from 10 a.m. to noon. At the open house, youth and parents will have the opportunity to learn more about the club.
The club will host regular training rides and members will have the opportunity to participate in local racing. Bicycle racing has grown steadily in popularity in recent years. Races and rides are held within Lancaster County or near the county most weekends during the spring and summer months. Riders from several local teams participate in those races, but there is currently no junior development club to encourage local youth to race. The Rockets presented by Green Mountain hopes to foster a love of cycling among members that will ensure a life-long enjoyment of the sport.
More information about the club is available on the Green Mountain website, www.greenmtncyclery.com, or by calling the shop at 859-2422.
