Costumes. Treats. A haunted barn. “Harvest-themed beverages.” Pulsating music. Oh, and there’s a bicycle race too.
The Wayne Scott Xross race will be held this Saturday at Fair Hill, Md., at the northeast tip of Maryland, just below the Pennsylvania line and about an hour and 10 minutes by car south east of Lancaster. The first race begins at 9 a.m.
The race, presented by West Chester-based First State Velo Sport, takes advantage of its non-UCI status to relax the rules. The course on the Fair Hill Natural Resource Area includes a trip through a barn at the horse show grounds, and according to an article on dailypeloton.com, a pass through the “Heckle Hut.”
The large, open-sided barn-like structure will be a place for spectators to cheer or jeer as racers dismount and overcome barriers. The Heckle Hut will also include a DJ playing electronica music, Big John’s Barbecue, and free beverages. Racers and non-racers, children and adults are encouraged to come in costume. Merchandise prizes will be awarded for the best racing and non-racing costumes.
Pre-registration for the races is available online until 9 p.m. tonight, or in person on Saturday. There will be a free kids race at 1 p.m.
