Cyclocross returns to Lancaster County

With the cancellation of the remainder of the RedRoseRaces.com season, the only three cyclocross races planned for the county this year were wiped from the schedule. One of those, the Wonderland Cyclocross Race, has been restored.
David Butterworth, the controlling partner of RedRoseRaces, has brought back the race in conjunction with Christiana Cycling. The race will be held Saturday, Nov. 22, at East Lampeter Community Park on Hobson Road.
Butterworth had held the Wonderland race for at least the past two years. It was to be held under the aspices of RedRoseRaces this year, along with Butterworth’s other Pro-Am Cycling races. Butterworth restored some of those races this summer under the Pro-Am banner after the collapse of RedRoseRaces at the beginning of June.
Although the regional cyclocross calender is filling up, the Wonderland race is the only one to be held locally.
Cyclocross is traditionally a fall sport in Northern Europe, coming after the end of the road racing season. It has been gaining popularity in the U.S. in recent years, with USA Cycling adding an automatic cyclocross ranking on each license sold. Cyclocross is held off-road and typically involves running or riding over obstacles including sand pits and barriers. Winners are those who complete the most laps of the circuit over a designed period of time.

I just discovered the article while searching for information about the 2008 Wonderland Cyclocross. Thanks for writing about cyclocross, which is such a tiny niche sport in the U.S. that many cyclists don't even know about it.
This is a fantastic sport whether you are riding or spectating (well bundled up, of course). You can go to a local park and be right in the thick of the racing action. Unlike road cycling or cross-country mountain biking, the repeated laps make it continually engaging to watch from a fixed location.
The bikes resemble road bikes, but they're specially designed just for cyclocross with cantilever brakes that provide mud clearance, and knobby (though skinny) tires. If you're just getting started, you can substitute a mountain bike, but a light cyclocross bike is better for carrying over the barriers.
Come to Wonderland on November 22 to see what cyclocross is all about!
